Mercedes-Benz’s slogan – The best or nothing – is truly alive in Limpopo, where seven of the province’s 11 top politicians are being driven around in the famous German brand thanks to taxpayers. The seven MECs have a penchant for the ML SUV series, which has since been rebranded to GLE.

These seven cars, as well as a Jeep, a Lexus, a VW Touareg and a Range Rover, have cost the provincial government R8m, and include extras such as metallic paint, sun roofs, tinted windows and maintenance plans.

DA provincial leader Jacques Smalle posed questions about the cars to various provincial departments and Premier Stan Mathabatha’s office. The responses reveal the following about cars bought between the 2015/16 and 2016/17 financial years:

. Mathabatha is chauffeured in a superfast R1.2m 6.4 litre Jeep Grand Cherokee. Extra features include brilliant black paint for R62 360, R3 070 for smash and grab film, and a R12 443 extended maintenance plan;

. Health MEC Phophi Ramathuba rides in a R1.2m, 3 litre V6 Range Rover Sport, with R87 872 in extras including “indus silver” metallic paint for R4 900, ebony premium headlining for R5 600, alloy sparkle silver wheels for R14 300, double locking for R10 000, noble-plated paddle shift for R600, a rear-view camera for R8 700, an electric deployable towbar costing R14 400, and VPS paint protection film and smash and grab film worth R18 972;

. Agriculture MEC Joyce Mashamba rolls in a R941 513 Mercedes-Benz ML 350 Blue Tec with R16 131 in extras, including strobe lights, a blue dash light, and smash and grab film. The car was bought when she was appointed as social development MEC;

Social development MEC Mapula Mokaba-Phukwana gets from A to B in a R740 848 Mercedes-Benz ML 400 with R86 008 in extras

The DA lauded finance MEC Rob Tooley, who bought a Toyota Lexus RX EX for R783 560 with no extras.

So I guess it's OK if you don't for any optional extras?

Sad thing is a Toyota Corolla would do the job just as well.

All catered for in the ministerial handbook.

I'm curious to find out what black people in general think about the spending of "officials" that get voted into these positions.

Just curious as judging from social media it seems white folk are against it, almost all....but black folk ,not all of them but most are fine with it and defend it furiously.
Help me understand.

People take a side and stick with it. Israel, gaza. Abortions. Death penalty. ANC, DA. people choose a side and will defend that side no matter what.

up to a certain point, politicians driving expensive cars , are just another politician kissing babies and making speeches,

its come to be expected especially when it comes to Africa, look at idi amin, bob mugabe, king of Swaziland ect ect.

I sometimes do wonder about what people actually do say? maybe they can justify it personally?

I see you've pretty much answered the question :D

Many black people of voting age aren't on social media. Rather speak to a sizeable number on the streets to get general feeling about this.

But you are blek

so you must know the minds of the people :)

I'm kidding, just don't understand the support, it's not like it's a direct benefit to the individual on social media, unless
Party comes first so they can do no wrong.
They are directly/indirectly employed by said party so benefit them being in power.
It's a white and black thing as names like Rupert and Ackermann are often brought into the discussion for some reason.

I am not on Twitter or Facebook, so I will never understand whatever is going on there, how do you even known if someone isn't trolling just to get the whites hot under the collar?

The blacks around me are very much opposed to all this bling by our government officials, I have never met one black person who even tried to justify the crass materialism displayed by our officials.

Hopefully you right about the trolling part as they never seem to be able to justify it logically and it does get people hot under the collar like you said.

I need to get away from social media I think, too much dumb.

I can assure you that there are more VWs on Limpopo roads than there are Mercs...

But on a serious, change the stupid ministerial handbook because these stupid politicians aren't sensitive to the current socio-economic situation in the country. There are many many SUVs very capable of delivering them to the rural areas in safety and comfort. I drove my Mom's Ford Everest this weekend and boy did I love it and it doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

I think what national government must do is to prescribe the brand of cars every minister must buy... e.g. A Toyota Fortuner and a Merc C class series ONLY (just as an example). If you do not like those then buy your own car with your larger than life salary.
