An underground fire has broken out in the Johannesburg CBD on Thursday afternoon.

Smoke can be seen coming from manhole covers in the streets with firefighters and emergency services on the scene.

The blaze has left businesses and houses in the area without power.

City Power's Sol Masolo says the cause of the fire is not known at this stage.

“We don’t know what the cause of the fire is and as I said the emergency services are on site at the moment just trying to put out the fire. Until such time that they finish, only then we will send our team on the ground to try to assess the extent of the damage as well as to establish the cause of the fire.”

My monies on cable thieves(again)... hopefully got smoked and roasted

Probably cable theft.

And again businesses will be left in distress as it will probably again take days to clear the fumes after the fire is out

Sadly yeah, what was it last time? 4 days or something before they could even get in and see the damage

Tragedy of the commons. Doesn't hurt their pockets, so they don't care.

I think its a bit more than that.

Those cables bring the rich people electricity while they are in shacks burning meths for warmth.

They risk jail time and death for perhaps a few hundred bucks - there is definitely more to it than just the money.

More to it like what?

I remember this also happening somewhere in 2006/7 and the CBD was without electricity for weeks as it was too hot, even after the fire, for teams to go underground and start repairs.

While there are some bigger businesses in the jhb cbd, there are very many small businesses and people that live there that lose much or even close their businesses

It has happened more recently as well.

I'm not saying its a good strategy - just how they see it. Its something that they wont be able to access because of the cost, so why should they care ?
