Greece wildfires: At least 74 dead as blaze 'struck like flamethrower'

Survivors of the wildfires that have killed at least 74 people in Greece have described how they were forced into the sea by a blaze that "struck like a flamethrower".

"The flames were chasing us all the way to the water," said one victim.

Meanwhile, the bodies of 26 adults and children who apparently died hugging each other were found close to the sea.

As the search for missing persons continues, a website has been set up to help relatives trace their loved ones.

Hundreds of firefighters have been battling the flames, which have been fanned by winds of up to 60mph (100km/h) and have devastated the seaside village of Mati, engulfing homes and vehicles.

One survivor, Nikos Stavrinidis, told ABC News that despite the air-conditioning in his car, he could still feel the heat from outside as he travelled on a highway.

And then there were the dead. By Tuesday afternoon an official death toll of 74 had been announced. With rescue workers going door to door and car to car finding bodies, there were almost certainly more.

What many had hoped would be the best escape from the flames and smoke – the sea – had instead become a route to death. Charred bodies were plucked from the water or found on beaches.

Early on Tuesday the remains of 26 men, women and children had been found in an open lot off Poseidonos, almost all of them locked in embrace. Among them, mothers protectively holding their children – a last act before the flames engulfed them.

Retracing their steps, rescue workers believe most headed to the area because of its proximity to the sea before discovering in the smoke and confusion that there was no access from the clifftop to the beach below

Amazing that normal able-bodied people can die like that. I geuss it is part of the modern disconnect with nature. Darwin award winners for sure.

Ah, the voice of the intelligent, compassionate conservative opining on something he clearly knows f*** all about.
 
Wow, thats one hectic fire. Really feel sad for the people affected
