Fitting tires to wider rims?

I have seen more and more people doing it as of late.

I'll admit, it looks pretty sexy. But obviously pretty dangerous not so? I mean the odds of the wall getting damaged is multiplied, also there is no real support from the tire wall as it seems to be sitting at / \ angles.

I guess people do it just because it looks cool?
 
Never saw the point. Surely it's like wearing a shoe that's two sizes to big for your feet...

Nope. I feel the safety of the vehicle would be compromised. Just seeing more and more vehicles in our parking area doing it. Normally the small hatchbacks. I'll admit, it looks nice. But will never do it myself :o
 
What is stopping air from escaping with the movement on the road, unless you are go to be driving at less than 60km/h? Can it survive slightly hard cornering?
 
Definitely think its stupid, but then again the cars are so low that it can't go more than 40km/h so theres no safety risk.

One of those things that make the car look cool in the parking lot but useless on the road.
 
Looks stupid.
I wonder if it compromises the roadworthiness of the car and has an effect on insurance? Can't be good for handling in any case.

Rubbish.

The tyres are not designed to work that way. They're just stretched onto the bead.

That makes sense. No way a normal tyre could be stretched like that and remain safe

There is an Aygo in the parking area (I go there to smoke)

It looks pretty sexy with the bulging tires. But I have to agree, there is no way it can be safe in any shape or form. There is a 1400 Nissan Bakkie here doing the same, but has wide tires on it and bulging still up and above that. Wheels stick out about 15cm from the car on each side...

I can agree that there are probably rims and tires made for this. I can assure you the Chinese tires on the Aygo is no way made for it, nor is the rim :o

Honestly looks like he fitted 175 tire on a 225 rim.

That makes sense, if not properly done with the correct rims and tires I doubt it safe in any way

I checked the tire size was 176/65/14 and I can only assume the rim being 225 as it's clearly not intended for that tire. Also has not lip or anything. Tire honestly looks like this / \.

Stretch looks awesome, but obviously the "wheel" will easily damage.

Its done all over the world, with no issues. You muppets and your safety standards, hilarious.
