We told users we track them – Google

Google tracks the location of your Android phone even when you tell it not to, the AP reported. Google stated, however, that this is made clear to users.

AP published its report after conducting an investigation into the matter, which it asked Princeton university researchers to confirm.

Google should rather correct the bug in their search engines giving you 80% + stuff you did not search for even with "---".

Google "cane".

You get a picture of a walking cane, but the description is of cane, the plant. Found it a month ago and reported it but nothings happened.

Google still tracks you even when the phone is switched off. I was driving from Jeffreys Bay to Port Elizabeth airport using GPS and at the airport I disabled location services and GPS and on the airplane I switched off my phone and after the airplane landed in JHB I switched my phone on again after I collected my baggage and used Uber from Ortambo to my home and I found the history of the trip with stops at petrol stations and the history of the flight to JHB and the Uber ride to my home

When I mention this to people, they look at me like I'm silly.

I was under the impression that all Android uses knew this. Truth be told, it doesn't bug me at all so I can easily live with it... Unless I was going to heist a bank or something along those lines.

Living in the U.K. where the majority of people are against this, I’m amazed at how so many South Africans seem fine with being monitored like this. I find this quite bizarre especially since a lot of South Africans criticise other countries for being a “nanny state”, yet don’t have a problem being tracked and monitored in their own country :)

Also, the article in the U.K. states that it’s not just on Android devices, but all Google apps on other platforms including iOS :)

Just uninstall Google from your Android phone.

Google doesn't need to track me - I'm either at work or at home. Really nothing sinister :p

Maybe because everyone including Apple does it and atleast Google makes the data more useful for you.

You turned on GPS to use Uber. What "history of the flight to JHB" did you find exactly? Where is this history stored?

What are you or the majority of the people in the U.K. not fine with?
Google certainly does not represent itself as a state or country.

In S.A I think people feel that
1) There are more important things to be worried about
2) We already knew this and are pretty used to media hype by now.

When you have an ANC government destroying the country your priorities are a bit different...

What sinister things you think evil Google is going to do with this data?

Google still tracks you even when the phone is switched off. I was driving from Jeffreys Bay to Port Elizabeth airport using GPS

so they know you were at pe airport

and at the airport I disabled location services and GPS and on the airplane I switched off my phone and after the airplane landed in JHB I switched my phone on again after I collected my baggage and used Uber from Ortambo to my home

and now they know you were at or tambo

and I found the history of the trip with stops at petrol stations and the history of the flight to JHB and the Uber ride to my home
so are you saying the logical deduction that they made that if you were at pe airport at x time and then or tambo at y time, is them tracking your phone while it was off?
