In case you see percentage values displayed on your phone's screen (similar to area info) and you are in the area and wondering what it means...

MTN is running the following promotion in Grahamstown (for prepaid customers only).

Your percentage values are due to: Dynamic Tarrif promo running in Grahamstown. The % amount indicates the amount of discount the subscriber will receive on that particular cell at that particular time.

Discounts only apply on MTN PAYG subscribers making calls from Grahamstown to any other MTN subscriber anywhere in the country.

If an MTN PAYG subscriber dials *222# from his cell phone while in the Grahamstown area he will receive additional information and has the option to register.

Registration is absolutely free. There are no hidden costs. The test will run for a few weeks and will enable MTN to access customer’s sensitivity to price amongst other things. For these few weeks MTN PAYG subscribers in Grahamstown will receive the benefit of significantly cheaper calls to other MTN subscribers.

The discount advertised on cell broadcast will vary with time of day and location in Grahamstown.

Most MTN PAYG subscribers in Grahamstown have been notified by SMS of this service already.

Some MTN staff will be in Grahamstown over the next few days to access subscriber’s impressions of the test so far.

Please can you pass on this information to the people you know in your area.

I was actually thinking of something like this yesterday.

in the european internet cafe's, you don't pay a fixed fee for internet access. depending on how many people are online at the time, the price changes.

Cellphone Networks should do the same. if more people are calling at a time, the price should go up. almost like a dynamic peak.

I recall the same methodology that was implimented by Sepcom?
A service provider for mtn that doesn't exist anymore today but, they also offered a similar service.

If I remember correctly, you could call other mtn subscribers for free during certain hours during the evening and there was also a tarif plan that allowed you to call certain specified mtn subscribers on the same plan at no cost.

free calls? maybe that's why they're not in existance anymore :P

Not just in Grahamstown surely.

Odd how they can start writing odd stuff on our handsets without telling us first. But that's the way of this world. Ho, hum!

yeah, I've seen it too. I've seen percentages as low as 75% in Stellenbosch

^^but isn't 75% high ;) Cool idea. They don't advertise it so people don't find out and activate it and save money

I still dont get why this doesnt apply to contract customers?
