Aperture vs Lightroom

Finally decided to get a decent digital camera (EOS 400D) and am debating between which one to use - Apple's Aperture or Adobe's Lightroom.

Any recommendations?
 
Well neither unless you are a serious buff at using a program like Photoshop in your sleep.

If you just want to fiddle with constrast and red eye removal and remove backgrounds then there are more suitable apps.
 
I live with photoshop open anyway but that's a way different application - aperture/lightroom seem to be geared more to being a virtual darkroom.

Currently my decision has been influenced by Aperture not wanting to display the raw files - "currently unsupported" messages on a maroon screen.

Giving lightroom a shot now and all seems to be working. :D
 
Seems strange that Aperture can't handle RAW, since it can be done in iPhoto. There is even a update to support the 400D in particular.

Strange indeed. iPhoto isnt supporting it either and I've tried two machines (my mini and my powerbook) and both are having the same problem. Even preview should be handling it but nada.
 
Yeah - even though that update is included in the latest version of Aperture I still tried to install it last night but to no avail.

Dont take my word for it - there are numerous threads on Apple's discussion forum with people having the exact same problem. ;)

I've tried everything from reinstalling 10.4.8 to repairing permissions but nothing has worked so far. The 10.4.8 on my mini is pretty much virgin so it should have worked on that if it was going to.
 
Can you at least pull the images into iphoto, or does it have the same problem?

BTW what alternatives are there (i.e <<R2500) for simple manipulation - fixing red-eye, couple of masks etc

I can pull in the jpg's but I wanted to use RAW. The odd thing is Lightroom (Adobe's free software - in beta) works perfectly with the camera. :o

For pixel manipulation I'm going to stick with photoshop because a) I have it, and b) I know how to use it :)

Trying a few more tricks to see if I can get Aperture to behave.

EDIT - interesting - the PPC version of the Digital Camera RAW Support Update seems to have worked where the aforementioned, and attempted, Universal failed.

Now to get it working on the mini because it's laggy as heck on the powerbook.

I quite like the look of aperture, but Canon's Digital Photo Professional app works fine for me (using it with an EOS 20D)
 
Aperture is altogether too grey for me... I wish that apple would stick to the HIG more closely. Grey backgrounds on the histograms are really hard to use and what's wrong with using the window control traffic lights in the "normal" way.
That said I don't think that Aperture will be bang for my buck. Can't really justify the cost in relation to iphoto functionality for what I need to do.

You prefer Canon's Digital Photo Professional over iPhoto?

I've installed it but havent had the time to play around with it.

EDIT - it's balking at my screen resolution. :(

I wouldn't say prefer it over iPhoto, as I haven't really spent alot of time using iPhoto or playing around with it. I was familiar with DPP from the PC days, so I went with it.

Decided to stick with iPhoto until I get my MPB - then I'll move to Aperture.

Now I just have to take some pictures :D
 
I've been using Lightroom Beta with Photoshop (on Windows) and I'm pretty impressed with the workflow and integration. My only info on aperture was watching a demo a while back... it did seem apple-like :)

Not really. I was pretty hooked on getting a Canon and the reviews for the 400D were favourable. That was enough for me. :)
 
Spoke to the local photogeek at the expensive camera shop and was told that the D80/90 is supposed to have better colour depth reproduction compared to the 350/400D. But then again he didn't know about camera raw.

@bwana, do you get the full fps (3?) when shooting high speed in camera raw or only in jpeg/tiff?
