Was reading about this in the latest Linux Format and it looks interersting. The official site doesn't ship to Africa, so does anyone know where to get them locally?

I'm not aware of any place that stocks or sells them locally. I got a couple from www.sparkfun.com - very reasonably priced, good rates for shipping, and I got them very quickly (about a week), even though I used the cheapest shipping option.

I'd highly recommend Sparkfun and would definately buy from stuff from them.

Arduino in South Africa

I am currently in the process of getting a large batch of Arduino Diecimila's made up. I will be selling them online as soon as I can (hopefully for much cheaper than foreign suppliers and with minimal shipping cost).

I have also been trying to get hold of these boards from a local supplier but nobody stocks them. Its strange, as these are such useful little critters :-)

Anyway, let me know if you are interested

Also read the LXF article - very interesting looking little thing. Jarrydb, how much do you expect to be able to sell them for?

just wanna add my 2c. i bought a decimilia around 3 months ago and it was probably the best purchase i made in a year, what an awesome piece of kit for the price. the community support is what makes this product fun though, some many pieces of sample code you can stitch together to create dreams...highly recommended for the tinkerer.

SO biteme. when you gonna organize a workshop....also i see that jarrydb has one post, not worth sending him a pm about stock

biteme is not here right now, i put him back in his box because he was being nasty. i'd still send jarrydb a pm , or follow this tutorial if you want to make a simple one yourself

alternatively, ebay.co.uk (search for freeduino) is where i/him got our/mine/his from

How is the manufaturing going?

Local Arduinos

Hey all

At the risk of being crapped on for advertising on this forum (Assuming anyone reads this ancient thread) - I'm producing small quantities of Arduinos locally.

They're Atmega168 based, and should come in around R200 or so, less if I have luck finding alternate sources of components.

I won't be taking orders or anything - I'll be producing small batches, and it'll be first-come first-served. I've got 5 or so at the mo.

Drop me a PM for info.

Regards

AntonC

Hi guys

There seems to be a growing interest in the Arduino in South Africa and I am starting a local Arduino Community for South Africa located at http://arduino.za.net. I have noticed that there are several people scattered around the country who have purchased or made copies of the Arduino from the plans available on the net. Its time to bring the community together and get things going.

I have also developed my own clone of Arduino I call Zardino, what seems to be the first South African or even African Arduino derivative.

It has the exact same functionality as the original Arduino and has been developed with keeping costs down especially for us here in South Africa. I'll publish more info and schematics and PCB layouts soon.

Nothing can compare with the bragging rights of having an original so if you can afford the original please get it.

We really need to get a local community established as there is a lot of potential for having fun and learning through Arduino.

The Arduino certainly is a very nifty little thing and one can't go wrong with Atmel, I feel.
I tend to work with purpose-built boards and have a fairly extensive setup for "tinkering" as it's my trade, but this is something I'd get my nephew or something.

Bad thing about Atmel is their lead times yo-yo around like crazy. One minute there is stock, next time you inquire the parts or on 10 to 12 weeks delivery. Been burnt like this before. At least Microchip has predictable lead times.

Who is your supplier? I agree the lead times can be annoying at times (Only ever really had issues with programmers being out of stock) but they're so much cheaper than Microchip that it's worth it for me.

A few weeks back when we quoted there was stock on ATTiny13A's at EBV and AAD, land the order and stock cleaned out, new delivery date mid Oct

Had to source through a buying house in Europe and pay the associated price
