But high call costs due to state-controlled Telkom's virtual monopoly of the fixed-line market are deterring some investors.
Paris Mashile, head of communications regulator ICASA, said seven or eight American companies had visited South Africa in the last week with a view to building hubs to deal with customer queries by telephone, but said they were put off by call costs.

hahah, yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah, i believe Telkom have cost South Africans at least 155 000 call center jobs thanks to their high prices. This would have lifited at least a million south africans above the poverty line.

I have no words to describe how much I hate Telkom. Preventing human beings from obtaining jobs so that the may earn a descent earning is a total and utter disgrace.
 
I wonder, is the gov. aware of these things? If they are, why the hell are they not doing anything about it? Absolutely disgracefull, makes me wonder how "well they are looking after us". Can't be their major concern by the looks of things.
 
Telkom would also offer special deals, as they would do for big organisations, ye know, like the government, on call costs.
Still outpriced, my oh my.

No, they should be put on trial for gross abuse of the South African public. Kinda like a warm crimes comittee

My point exactly, why do we have a gov. To make money, or to look after the wellbeing of the country's people? From where I'm standing it looks more intent on turning a buck than looking after the people who put it there in the first place. Very sad state of affairs. :(
 
Guess Telkom wasnt satisfied just laying of 50k of their own people. But they're PROUDLY SOUTH AFRICAN - it says so on their website.
 
South Africans can thank telkom for increasing the 'wealth gap' quite significantly.
 
Oh, and in a recent report, we lost the business of at least 32 major International companies.... thanks to telkom.
 
As a form of retaliation, what about we work on getting Telkoms "Proudly South African" Status revoked?

That'd be a public and humiliating slap in the face!
 
That would be a glorious thing. I know SAA just got fined by "Proudly SA", maybe that could work just as well.
 
you wont. you pay to be a part of that, and telkom is paying for it with your money. however, hellkom.co.za says that Telkom is a member of unproudly south african :D

The only recourse you really have to all of this is get of your asses, and do something about it. become activily inolved in a group that is fighting telkom. deeds are more important that words.

Wont ever happen, Telkom is a founding member and major sponsor LOL.
It would be kinda like asking the government, which has a 40% stake in Telkom, to take action against them, wahahaa, Snowball in Hell.
 
There is simply not enough Taxmoney coming in, to pay the gov salaries and houses and cars weekly, so they need to have huge shares in Telkom to make up for loss of taxes..

Dont you people understand, the gov also have to experience FREEDOM and RICHES..

ps. regarding proudly SA, what would it take to create a genuine proudly SA system, with the work force of myadsl, wouldnt that be possible, atleast with Internet related services? Since myadsl is recognized pretty well allready, having a status that, "Company XXX is recognized as a XXXX company according to myadsl members, where Company got XXX votes for excellent service out of XXX votes."

Something like this, would have alot more meaning than attaching a stupid, PROUDLY SA, to your product.
