So I have Ciguatera poisoning...

And it is not fun at all. It has taken 2 weeks, cost R35k and 2 trips to a specialist in Cape Town to finally be diagnosed with Ciguatera poisoning. The doctors first scared the bejeezuz out of me by telling me I was displaying symptoms of multiple sclerosis at first! Well, that isnt true, but this isnt a walk in the park either.

My symptoms:

  • Frequent dizzy spells
  • Tingling sensations around my hands and feet
  • Constant nausea
  • Liquid out of both ends :sick:
  • No appetite
  • Cold and hot sensations sometimes at the same time
  • Headaches

(There are more serious symptoms that I could develop apparently as well, like hallucination and temporary paralysis of body parts as it is neurological)

Treatment

  • Vokol to be honest
  • They are merely treating the symptoms with a multitude of pills
  • The symptoms can last for years apparently and can re-appear later on in life as well.

So has anyone ever had this before or heard of anyone who has had it? It is really affecting my work, costing me a fortune, changing my moods and making me a little depressed to be honest. I would love to find out if there are any alternative treatments that I can try? Not looking for sympathy here, just want to get a little more info about it...

I am not just a DJ and have always had medical aid until a few weeks ago when I sold my company and decided to change medical aids. I developed the symptoms shortly after cancelling my medical aid so no medical aid will cover me now for this :(

Ate barracuda a while back and the docs reckon that is the culprit. I got it from my local fishmonger and its a great tasting fish. You cant really cook out the ciguatoxin in the fish as it stays in their flesh or something along those lines. The fish gets it from eating another fish that contains the toxin...

Well cooked, but it doesnt make a difference apparently. I ate it about 3 weeks ago. The squirty symptoms are over, except when I get really dizzy combined with the nausea. Driving is quite interesting as well...
 
Darn - sorry to hear DJ, Barracuda :eek: Never thought of them as edible - but there ya go - learn something new everyday.

On a side note that is rather tacky - but perhaps get one of the "Jacob Zuma Shower Heads" - if it can cure AIDS, this should be a walk in the park for it ;)
 
First I've ever heard of it Interesting. but Wiki says that it can be passed intimately under the sheets Have you been with strange fish eating women recently?
 
Strange in the bedroom only, but I refused to allow the fish on my sheets. :p

I suspect the barracuda is the more likely culprit, unless I could sue the offending female?
 
In Northern Australia, where ciguatera is a common problem, two different methods are widely believed to be available for determining that fish harbors significant levels of ciguatoxin. The first method is that if a piece of fish is contaminated with the toxin, flies will not land on it. The second is that the toxin can be detected by feeding a piece of fish to a cat, as cats are allegedly highly sensitive to ciguatoxin and will display symptoms. It is not known whether there is any veracity to either belief.

when I was in standard 1 in the 80's I stepped on a dead fish carcass
my feed swell up and white puss came out later. I also had hallucination and :sick:
