I know VMWare Fusion is in beta, and I have read some comparisons.
Any opinions on the benefits of one over the other?

I haven't tried Fusion yet, and I doubt I'll upgrade to || v3, as the most changes in 3 relates to native video support, which I don't need as I don't play games on my VM

I'm getting rid of ||s as I need the space - my 6 month old Aperture library is already over 25gb.

In future I might try VMware Fusion - looks interesting.

Had a quick look at the website ... The fact that you can have the different apps displayed in Expose like the Mac Apps is very nice ... that is the one thing ||'s Coherence is missing ... it is still one "block" of Windows apps, not being able to select them individually from the Expose view

The Fusion Beta is 160mb ... will download tonight and see if I can convert my Parallels VM to a Fusion one ... and run a trial to see what its like compared to Parallels

DING DING DING ... WE HAVE A WINNER!!!

Holy Crap guys ... the conversion from ||s VM to Fusion was easy-peasy, no hickups, and it took like 50 minutes. I have to say, if Fusion is as stable as ||s, I will definitely fork out the cash to get a copy of Fusion final ... Unity is amazing (see my one of my previous posts) ... to have your windows apps properly "scattered" with Expose is unbelievable! Definitely one up on ||s with that one!

They now offering a pre-order special for $39.99. Normal price $79.99.

For a limited time, you can get VMware Fusion for only $39.99 by pre-ordering the software from our online Web store. Don’t wait—this offer is only valid until the general release of VMware Fusion 1.0.

I thought pre-order was $49-99 ... will have to go have a look. I'd rather pre-order Fusion, than upgrade ||s to be quite honest

One thing about fusion is the CPU usage ... it is currently running between 65 and 78, whereas ||s normally runs MUCH lower

This may seem obvious but you have tried disabling the debug option in Fusion right?

I pre-ordered Fusion as it worked better with linux VMs than the parallels beta I tried did.

All my past experiences with VMWare's products have been good and Fusion is no different. For the pre-order price, it was a steal.

I haven't fiddled with it at all ... just installed, converted and use ... running as we speak! Where would I switch it off?

Fusion > Preferences > Diagnostics > Uncheck the "Enable Debugging checks" box.

That might help.

Update: I actually wrote quite a nice feedback post last night, but the Iburst monster seem to have gobbled it up, so here we go again:

As far as RC1 products go, Fusion is very stable, but I do have a couple of issues with it:

1. Either the VM itself is slower than Parallels, or the networking is not fully sorted yet. When connecting to my M$ Dynamics servers, there is quite a difference in response times between ||s and Fusion.

2. The sound management between Fusion and OS X is not that hot:
- Parallels: Bluetooth headset connected to MBP as sound device, and Parallels successfully passes all sound on to OS X and then OS X to the headset (including my VoIP softphone in WinXP)
- Fusion: Same setup as above, but Fusion doesn't pass the audio to the selected device in OS X ... passes it straight to the internal devices on the MBP

3. USB support is also extremely slow (and I think this is what initially pushed the CPU up to around 80% usage for Fusion)

So, for now, I am back on Parallels (need my office phone), but will definitely consider Fusion in the future, when they have their official release available

Thank you, Dankie, Ke a leboga
