hey guys, I tried to go back a while and see if anybody is actually playing games online using Neotel, but nothing really concrete :(

So my question being, has anybody played games using neotel, and what is your experience on it? Are there bad lag spikes, is the connection stable etc etc etc. I really only play World of Warcraft, maybe there's somebody out there that also plays/played it out there.

I don't have a Neotel connection myself , but it might work for WOW. International latencies aren't that bad. I think it's on par with ADSL. Not sure about lag spikes. From what I hear the connection is stable, but disconnects are an issue.

With local latencies of 150-250 it still won't be good enough for local gaming. Especially for FPS games. I'm hoping that this will be sorted when I FINALLY have coverage.

I haven't played anything like wow, but i have played alot of Crysis and i can say for certain that it is a sketchy experience at best. Latencies are not so great (between 100-300ms) but there are high spikes that can reach upward of 2000ms and this causes timeouts. The connection is mostly stable but the latency is most definately not. This results in FPS shooters not being so great, but i am sure it will have little effect on a MMORPG. Here is a graph of the latencies to an sgs local crysis server:

A friend of mine plays WoW on Neotel, he is on the Whisperwind server, i recall him saying that the latency is not all that bad but can spike over the 1000ms range. Will double check with him though and get back to you!;)

Yes, that concerns me too, the bloody latency problems. I wonder why Neotel uses the fastest fiber connection and then messes speeds up on the last mile by using radio waves? Anyway, with only 999/month for an uncapped service it'll blow ALL competitors right out of the water, particularly the Telclowns. I'll be so happy to get rid of those lousy bastids and their noisy copper lines.
I wonder anyway why we do have to talk about all those stuff in these forums. Most my friends in germany and worldwide don't even know what latency or ping means. They go OMG when I tell them I need to run out to the next gas station, in the dark of night, to buy a new internet voucher. They just enjoy super fast and stable internet for like 200 ZAR/month uncapped incl. unlimited local phone calls.
I know the market here in SA is much smaller and so the ISPs can't give us super deals like that. But is it asked too much to expect at least something of same quality?

I play WoW on Neotel. My average latency is 600ms-700ms but recently it's gone up to 900ms-100ms. Not sure whats happening at the moment because all my internet browsing has gone to sh 1 t. Going to be calling Neotel to find out what the problem is.

Iburst has been good to me in the past when it came to wow, but in the last few weeks I get dc'ed so flippen often it's actually embarrassing. Looking for a replacement, and as I'm renting, I'll much rather stick to a 'mobile' solution.

I guess I'll just have to get ADSL if I wanna keep playing.

Neotel & WOW

Hi, currently looking for the best internet option for playing world of warcraft. I have a telkom 384 line and will get 750 - 850 avg. ping on telkom shaped account. When using WebAfrica unshaped prepaid I can get the ping down to about 400 - 500 which is not to bad.

Would really appreciate it if there are wow players on neotel to give an update on there experience.

I read a while ago that there was going to be some sort of testing done for gaming on neotel? It doesn't seem to have materialised yet.

Can anyone confirm if this Neoconnect Prime offering will be worse/better/on par for online gaming than Vodacom's HSDPA offering?
My Vodacom contract has expired, so checking for the best deals before renewing or taking out a different contract.

I've had relative lag issues on FPS's with HSDPA, but if locally hosted the results were much improved. Has anyone tested both offerings for comparison?
