Hi

I have previously set up my Iburst connection through a wireless router's internet port (PPPoE), but ran into trouble using certain internet applications ex. MSN, while the web traffic worked fine.

Q. Does anyone know how to overcome this problem - I assume the problem was the ports setup on the router's wirewall - and any suggestions on which wireless router is a good affordable one to buy which will suite my needs?

Much appreciated
chris.

any router should be fine to use iburst on... it all depends on what firewall settings you configure on your router. but now if you are looking for a decent wireless router I would say linksys has received a lot of high ratings...

P.S Don't buy into the whole 108Mbps wireless connection as the standard 802.11n (108Mbps) has not been standardized and there is no official support for 108Mbps connection. so get a Router with the security that will suit your needs.

I have the netgear wireless which works great when I connect to it through Ethernet but I still can't get the damn laptop to connect wirelessly.....

But I think it's my incompetance not the router... Digital planet has a bunch, mine cost R850ish 802.11b/g 4 wired ports, wireless with security....

I know nothing about these things though :)

Eish, for that price you'd better MAKE it work...

You could setup uPNP... *runs and hides* ;) - but my Messenger worked without having any special settings on the router.

am in the process of making iBurst work on a Cisco 1751

@Gavin

Make sure you have selected a security protocol that is supported by the laptop. I had major hassles getting my K-JAM and the wife's laptop to connect - the laptop supports all protocols, but the phone only supports WEP and WPA (TKIP). Took me weeks to get it sorted - turns out the mixed mode on the router didn't work too well. I had to tone it down to WPA-PSK (TKIP) before it would work.

urm uPNP... nice just comprimise your security for MSN... great job :) Might as well advertise your ip and username and password to your router :P

simple assign a WEP encryption to your router for the wireless and type the exact same encryption on your wireless and volia you'll be connected

I did make my tongue-in-cheek stance clear... :D

WEP, eh? My turn to take out the whip. :p
You don't want to use WEP if you can help it. There are plenty of free tools out there that will crack WEP "security" within 10 minutes. WPA as an absolute minimum.

well asides from that a "cheap" (I still contest that R700+ is way too expensive for the securityless routers) router with a firewall doesn't usually support WPS sercurity... and most "cheap" only give you the option of WEP or no security at all... what you say raithlin? So in generaly I was speaking about the "cheap" routers on the market...

Best bet grab yourself a wireless with MIMO router :) but be prepared to fork out over 1k

I am relatively new to this, so I have to ask.
Can I connect my Iburst USB modem to a router? Is there somekind of converter for USB to RJ45.

If so what router would one use?

My (Linksys WRT54GL) router cost R650, has WEP, WPA (TKIP & AES), WPA2 options. With a bit of help from DD-WRT it now also does my DynDNS, and handles my wireless network security quite well. I think I did pretty well, considering. (Incredibly Corrupt wanted me to pay R1700 for their offering...)

@JasonX: Take a look at the router above if your UTD connects via ethernet - otherwise you may have to go for one of the USB routers.

No, you cant. There are alot of USB converters out there, but I havent see none for Ethernet before, if you find that you could use it.

It will be very hard to find one of those USB modems in SA. You probably should have just bought the UTD..

Ja, ive gone and looked for those before for some reason.. MyADSL related im shure ;)

But getting one in or into SA doesnt sound worth it..

This USB router was the only one available in 2002 according to praticallynetworked.com, surely there must be more by now. Will have a look to see if I can find one here in SA. $139 mmm.

When I bought the USB Modem, I was going to use it with my laptop as well and didnt think anout connecting it to a LAN. But ya things change. And now I need to share it, I quess I can just use internet connection sharing through my PC. But not my first option.

At the risk of sounding like a helpdesk techie.... did you check the MTU on the router? It needs to be set in the router firmware to the same value thats used on for a direct connection.

In terms of which router is best:
I have about 10 iBurst connections that I have setup on Linksys WRT54GL's and I haven't had any problems. Some with the default firmware and some with DD-WRT so that I can have the extra features.
