[here we go the noobian questions]

as per
http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showpost.php?p=1102309&postcount=5

what is the cause of this latency, sometimes i will get 190ms while other times up to 700ms - using my unshaped verizon/saix.

verizon seems faster mostly, but then again saix at times is also better.

comes the question - what is the root of this latency

is it:
  • route to the server and back
  • our sat3 cables
  • raspppoe
  • firewall
  • router
  • line noise
  • dslams
  • linespeed
  • pc hardware
  • unholy zeplin

anyways. thinking of getting the DLG4300 router and upgrading line to 1024mb, maybe it cuts down a little on the lag...

I don't increasing the line speed is going to make as much difference as getting an unshaped account. Alot of people here rave about WebAfrica's prepaid unshaped accounts

Its several factors. I think upgrading your line speed should show some difference because you'll have more bandwidth. The problem is the SAT3 cables I think and the way they do the routing... but unshaped should always be unshaped... not just sometimes.

another one for the list:

ratio users on a line, the more are forced into same boat - more lag...

Distances mostly? I dont think 250ms is gonna be improved much better with ADSL technology from here to Europe... for myself in particular, playing on a server from the south most point of Africa :/

If you get higher latencies like 700 with unshaped that is just network congestion on the Telkom network. SAT3 cable to be precise.

Do you think the will verizon unshaped account help in that case?

Since WA have the option to switch between Veriozon and Saix, I have tested both on my unshaped account. Veriozon seems to get faster pings but a lot more spikes (about 480ms on V but due to spikes average out at about 640ms) (then 500ms on S with almsot no spikes and averageing out on 550ms)

On a tracert or ping destination Veriozon seems to be the best, but I like stability more.

I have a WA unshaped account and Shaped. I get a better latency with the shaped on War3 Server?? Dont know how the fluff that works..

I get 48 on shaped and with hosting I get 294-350.
On UnShaped i get 58 and 290.
haha makes no sense in my head but ok :)

48ms? you prob dont play wow on europe or us... from South Africa atleast

The fastest possible is 50 ms and that would be sitting on the Sat3 landing station and presuming the sat3 is conected directly to WoW servers :P

The speed of light is 299,792,458 meters per second
thus 299.792 km/ms
this would give ~50 ms travel time for 15 000 km

Then again latency is two-way so min would be 100ms as reported by your wow client.

tehavatar: I get 34ms
Well we dont all play on a self hosted server...
but 34ms is a bot slow for that? I got 35ms playing wow from Germany-France. And think latency on a home network should be below 5ms?

well playing the game from near day 1, the best MS i ever had in my wow life was like 290 ms with a SA connection.

so for 34ms id pretty much kill the bull for that!!:D

you guys always blame telkom for lag yet a guy on 24 meg line the uk gets a 400 ping on the bf 2 servers locally, is that also telkom? im asking because i do not know

how fast do you really think data can travel? i mean should we be getting 100ms ping when the datat has to travel to europe or asia or the america's? again just wondering because i dont know :)

400ms on a 24meg line :O
His conection must be really bad, i.e. a lot of packet losses. Or simply a lot of noise on his cable.

Data travel at about 0.7 x speed of light on copper wire and about 0.9 on fibre. You can do the calculations from that (or look at the satelite vs fixed line discussion we had earlier for wow).

wow is more lag friendly i guess...just the way blizz made it to be player/lag friendly....Im guessing its the infrastructure we have in place when it comes to data/lines/fibre optics in this region of the world. One of my buddies made a good point the other day: What about the international ports?

When i first started playing wow the MS wasnt all that bad,I was using Dial up and ISDN,Then came ADSL which is still relativley new in SA compared to the EU's or US broadband. When i moved house I found that my MS got worse buy a hell of a lot!!! so i contacted Telscum and they tell me that my lines are old and need to be replaced. But that was like 1 year ago and they pretty much laughed at me when i asked them to fix my lines and upgrade them.

So yes I blame telscum

Off-topic: compare a country like England to RSA...RSA is a much much bigger land mass that means more Engineers more Cables ect ect. Then IF you look at a first world country like England: Lots and lots of Engineers, less land mass meaning less cables plus they a first world country and have a good infrastructure in place to upgrade and fix problems.

when i lived overseas and if and when i had a problem with my broadband line( 5 years ago) the actual company that provided my ISP would send a Techy out to where i live and check everything for me.....my computer,my line plus the junction box if needed! on the same day i logged a fault.

I dont see telkom doing that!!

line speed has nothing to do with latency as far as i know

anything over 384 should be fine for wow

someone said if data travelled at light you would get 100ms ping now if is travelling at 0.7% of light then a 400-800ms ping makes sense

When you say local, do you mean UK to SA servers or UK to UK servers (IE local for him)?
