Isn't there a way to somehow filter local websites?

Hey ppl:) Ok so just about everyone knows about the Local only free cap from Telkom and MSN. I've been thinking about this for a while now and, isn't there a way to filter out search results to only show locally hosted websites?

The Pages from South Africa in Google aren't actually locally hosted pages, they only use local domains, which can be hosted anywhere in the world. Logically there must be some technical way to find locally hosted websites, right?

THANX:D

PS. Yes, I know about locallist.

since you know about locallist, have a look at http://locality.co.za/

It's a project aimed at indexing and filtering locally hosted websites. They have a firefox toolbar addon which has numerous features, one of which adds an overlay to google/live search results page which indicates whether the page is hosted locally or not.

I haven't tried the toolbar out, so maybe read up first at http://extension.locality.co.za/download

The toolbar is just a way of accessing their site. It offers a search function, but it doesn't appear to work. Let's just call it adware for now.

Thanx ZAMRG. I''l go check it out:)

@ALL Here is a way to show where a website is hosted. If you use StumbleUpon this may lead to the discovery of a new locally hosted website, but otherwise it doesn't help us a lot.

Indeed, as zamrg stated, the toolbar provides locality indicators in two major approaches; the location/address bar, and overlays on sites such as Google (South Africa) and MSN Live Search.

An example of which would be when you browse to a site, in a similar fashion to the way in which FlagFox operates, a flag will appear in the location/address bar indicating whether the current hostname is local or international. The benefits I believe our extension provides over FlagFox is that requests are made in real time to our server, and all updates to the addon itself occur locally too. FlagFox, by my understanding, contains an inline database which it queries from -- which would explain its 400KB+ size -- thus requiring frequent updating to remain up-to-date.

I'm not discounting the capability of FlagFox, so there's nothing preventing you from running both.

Feel free to let me know if you have any questions. :D

Yes indeed I do:) Isn't there a way to use the engine The Locality toolbar uses to determine the host location, to find all the local hosts? It just seems logic to me, although I don't know a lot about web hosting. If you have a list of all the locally hosted websites you can post it on Locality and let the people rate the sites.

Thanx :D

I hear you! I see no trouble in creating a separate index of hostnames captured by the toolbar, though they'll be in the following format: example.co.za -- Ie. no title, or description. In which case I'll try add extra functionality to freshen things up. :D

When will you fix the search function?

Ideally we need a 'local' Google.

I understand the search capability on the site, for the directory, is below average. I am endeavoring to improve it though. :o

Might I suggest http://www.live.com/ as a 'local' alternative to Google -- primarly due to it being mirrored locally by Akamai.

OK, that's a nice alternative to Google when you're capped, but it needs to have a LOCAL filter on it otherwise you can't use the results. I don't know how it would work because not all .za sites are hosted locally so it would have to search on another key.

As zamrg stated earlier; by having the toolbar installed you'll receive overlay functionality, which will indicate which results are locally hosted. An example of which can be seen here: http://mybroadband.co.za/photos/showphoto.php/photo/10329/size/big/cat/500

Also, just like Google, Live Search provides content filtering for South Africa too, which can be selected from here.

So much effort because our internet is retarded...

Oh, OK I see now. I had the toolbar installed and was not aware that the FLAG thing was happening. Maybe a little note somewhere?
