DVD Recorder RH1999H Macrovision

I am looking for a way to bypass Macrovision protection on my DVD recorder - yes I know that in the true sense it is illegal, but I would like to copy some of my daughter's VHS videos onto the recorder and get rid of the VHS machine.

These videos are all originals and when I attempt to copy them to the recorder, a message concerning "copy protection signal detected" is displayed. Is there a way around this? I assume that it is Macrovision protection on the DVD recorder preventing me from copying the videos.

literally, the vhs machine can read data off the tape that isnt displayed on the screen, so you cant see it, but the dvd recorder can see it and produces the copy protected message, which is how the macrovision works.

this chain can be broken at either end...disabling macrovision on the dvd recorder (dunno how) or by disabling macrovision on the vhs machine (very old vhs machines didnt pass this out of bound data) so using an old old vhs machine will produce ok results.

the last way is via a man in the middle attack, some items, sold as "video stabilisers" just sit in between the vcr and whatever other device and remove the out of bound data. simplicity.

me personally, if i cant find a no-macrovision-hack for the dvd recorder i will go hunt the second hand shops for an old vcr, so use a pc to capture from the vcr instead.

I had the exact same problem with my LG DVD recorder when converting VHS tapes to DVDs for my sisters kid. I found a way to do it. You must record over the RF input (aerial input) and not using the AV composite inputs. Of course theoretically you loose a little bit of quality compared to using composite but the dvds I produced looked almost identical to the the vhs masters.

Hmmm, did not think of using the RF connector. I will try it over the weekend as the potential loss of quality is no concern because I just want to make sure I have it for her to view. Thx

LG RH1999H - copying protected discs to the hard drive

Hi everyone.
Nice tip on the RF connection, but what can I do if I want to copy my series of "friends" from the dvd drive onto the hard drive of the LG RH1999H?
The idea is that I can then surf the discs on the hard drive instead of having to sift through the boxes everytime I want to look for a specific episode (also the original dbl sided discs have got mixed up and there's no way to distinguish one from the next).
I don't have another dvd player (long story - just don't ever take anything to mastertronics for a repair!) so the RF connection or a product like DVD Red PRO won't work for me.

PS - I've heard that you can remove region encoding by going to "setup", scrolling down to the "lock icon" and then pressing 0 seven times.

Region free will only allow you to view movies from all over the world, no matter what region code.

You want to remove copy protection, and one way I think of is if you copy the protected DVD's to blank DVD's with an app like AnyDVD to remove that protection.
Then just dub those onto your LG.
