I have a 4MB line to the sunninghill exchange ( I am based in Rivonia).
My DSL has been extremely erratic of late, and in the last 4 weeks has become unusable during the day.

Here are the symptoms:

1) On Weekdays (During the day) my line speed slows to a crawl (20kBps speed test on telkom.co.za)
2) On Weekdays at around 7pm the line speed becomes fine again (400kBps speed test on telkom.co.za).
3) On the weekend, the line works perfectly at any time. I can boot up at 7am and the speed is 400kBps.
4) At my office which is a block up the road(on the same exchange), we have a business DSL account and there are no speed problems.

Here are the facts:

1) The line from the box outside my complex to my unit is NEW and there are no joins.
2) I have tested on wifi, LAN, and with two different DSL routers and get the same results.
3) Every technician that comes out to my place says that there are some "small errors" on my line but nothing major.
4) I called into the tech support line and got them to decrease the speed of my line to 2048,1024 and still the same problems occur.

I am absolutely clueless as to what the problem could be.
On one hand I think it might be the line itself, but then why does it work perfectly on the weekends and during the week at night?
They have replaced/swapped/reconnected me to a new port at the exchange numerous times and it never helps.

does anyone have any ideas?
I am tearing my hair out here and telkom are absolutely, without-a-doubt,totally and utterly clueless and incompetent.

I have the same problem in sunninghill on my 384 line. Week days during the day the speed is terrible, but in the evenings its fine and on weekends its also fine , I suspect that it may be shapping ( not sure if you are using unshapped ) with all the new businesses in the area. Strange cause its only been happening the last month or so....

day time = slow
evening after 7 = fast
weekends = fast.
hmmm
i would think that ita problem @ the exhange where the dslam is...
prob to many dsl users on it and not enough bandwithd to the exchange 4 every1.???

any1 else??

I have seen DSLAM's with only 2 x 2Meg connections back to the ATM backbone  over sell the service 50 to 1

yeah its only been happening for the past month or so..

Yesterday did a little experiment, logged onto wow and started a speed test.
At exactly 5pm my dsl dropped, then when it resynched and reconnected my speed test suddenly went from 20kBps to 400kBps, and my latency in wow went from 1500-odd to 550.

They must be oversubscribed at the exchange, no other reason for this.
If this is true what can i do to alert them to the problem? IS there anything i can do?
