Why can I not connect????

got my adsl installed Thursday, bought Netgear GT834 UK modem/router signed up with openweb.
Set up router and laptop picks up wireless network fine.
Set up netgear with the following settings:
Multiplexing LLC based
VPI 8
VCI 35
Encapsulation PPPoE

And DNS and login and password settings as per OpenWeb

when I go to the bottom of the page and click apply then click test it fails all the time.
I thought the problem could be the line but Telkom came in today and everything is working fine. PLEASE ANYBODY help. really appreciate it
 
Give us some more info, does the modem sync with the exchange?

Has the installation been verified by logging into the telkom website?
 
Hi I'm not sure what is meant my the modem syncing with the exchange. How do I check that.
Telkom technician said everything fine so I wasn't aware that I needed to check on the website. Is it on Telkom.co.za as I can't seem to find any installation verification link? thanks
 
use the SAIX test account I don't have the details anymore... with that you will be able to get on the telkom site. If that works you know the problem is with the ISP somewhere.

Also if you cna try and use a friends router to see if it is not you router that is the problem
 
Before you can connect via DSL the DSL modem needs to sync with the DSLAM in the exchange. I'm not familiar with the modem but there should be some indication, an LED or something, that indicates that the modem is synced. Have a look in you documentation.
Once the modem has sync the DSL account must be verified. This can be done either by the Telkom Technician logging into the telkom website with his guest account OR if you have opted for a self install: once the modem has synced and login with your account details and go to http://www.telkom.co.za/verifyadsl to verify the account.

I'm making plenty of assumptions in this post, I hope some of the information is helpful.

Just a though: make sure that your password is correctly entered into the router setup. A friend of mine could not connect for a few hours, after rechecking everything and rewiring his whole network and rebooting the router and modem we finaly realised that the password he entered was not correct :D

treied testing on the Telkom site said order number unknown WTF!
 
silkman, please confirm:

You can browse the Telkom sites but nothing else? only www.telkom.co.za works?

If this is the case you need to still verify your account. PLease have a look at the PDF link that I posted or phone the DSL helpline to get verified. I think it's 0800 375 375.
 
sorry grubsner i tried verifying from work and adsl is at home. i.e i entered my details on my work pc not at home. is this incorrect. Sorry to sound dumb but i dont know much of this techinical stuff
 
you have to login from the line/DSLAM that want to verify, hope that makes sense:D
I'm not too sure why, but is has something to do with registering or completing the installation procedure on the Telkom system. Try to verify from home tonight and let us know!

Please have a look at the PDF link I provided, it'll make more sense then.

ok guys thanks for all the help....up and running now.Called telkom and have them verify my installation...all good now thanks..
