I sit on a 4/10 and when my modem hangs out the windows 5/10.

Reason why i am asking is wether or not to get an external antenna and if it really will make a difference (I'm not LOS).

Could any1 that has installed an antenna give me their before speeds/ratings and then there after speeds/ratings..

Thanx in advanced..

here ya go

i live 12km form the Kemptonpark tower and have no LOS @ all.

Before direction antenna i had no signal @ all.

After Directional Antenna mounted on the 3m pole in my garden i get an ave of -84db - -90 db & 5/10 and 6/10

I think it will definitely be worth it. If you think a directional antenna wont help then get a standard iburst one or an omni,as long as you dont have too many tower around with okay signal, but I doubt it seeing as you only get 4/10.

Antennas dont cost that much and are definitely worth it, you hsould see a good increase.

I get 9/10 or -68db. Before using a directional antenna, I got 8/10 or -74 to -80 db from 3 different basestations, and my connection hopped around between them, resulting in reduced speed and many diconnects.

Worse without antenna.

My signal averages -58/61 10/10 with a directional Yagi pointing at a tower less than 1.3kms away. I needed a directional antenna as I receive strong signals from various base stations which causes the UTD to “signal hop” between base stations.

As you can see each case has its own merits. Best you have someone come to your home and to do a signal test with both an omni & directional antenna then make a decision.

I get between -77 and -80 and am about a km from the tower, its picks up all the other towers around me but im not sure if it hops between them, can I force it to connect to only the 1 tower and never the others which it picks up with ratings of 1/10?

Yes you can.

Use Eyeburst, to analyse your signal and move your UTD to a place so to weaken the signals you don’t want the UTD to connect to.

Ensure that there are at least 10db difference between the tower signal you wish to connect to and any other.

I have -91 normally, but an omni pushes it up to -84. I should try the directional...

Strange enough, the omni increases my speeds from +/- 20kB/s to 40kB/s.

Well I think your tower plays a role in those speeds. And -84 isnt that great, but it should be capable of more.. Northcliff right?

Ok great. Thanks for the feedback guys.

Did u guys purchase the antenna's offered directly from iBurst (Sandton) or did you guys source another company?

you should only use original iburst antennas purchased either from iburst or from one of their partners. dont buy a third party antenna.

Once again my confusion, isnt the directional antenna that people talk about on here a 3rd party antenna? The one you get from GRES or pheonixnet?

If it is, then theres no problem with that antenna, but that one is made for iBurst, you shouldnt get any other antenna besides the iBurst ones or this one.

About antennae...

I don’t like supporting monopolies. Telkom or any other, therefore what you need to check when purchasing an antenna, omni or directional:

There is a verified technical sheet available (does it work)
Frequency range includes 1787 - 1797MHz
The VSWR is 1.5 or lower for the above.
H Plane and E Plane beamwidth is angled at what you require it to be
Gain (excluding coaxal cable) is 10 dBi or higher
The rated power is 10 Watts
Impedance is 50 Ohms

Other considerations
Material it is made of (durability)
Wind resistance, especially in Cape Town (durability)
Mounting brackets that allow for correct positioning
Type of coax used (RJ58U or better) and length

I thought the Iburst Frequency was at the 1900MHz mark ??

Avg -54 Signal Stength (Gardens)

Sometimes people should know something about what they are talking about.

I have tested gres's / phoenixnet's antenna and they work slightly better than iburst's one. Directional is better as the more directional an antenna is the more the signal can be amplified. --- FULL STOP

The only time it is not better is when people don't bother to direct it properly.

Two questions?

Hi Bishop

The frequency range of 1900 MHz is used in Australia. Can I ask where in Gardens you are located, as the best signal strength I can obtain is -58, in Tamboerskloof?

Hi Seburn

I’m in agreement with your statement! A question for you though, if you don’t mind. Why have you set your maximum duplicate acknowledgement to one, instead of using the default value of two? Technical answer is preferred, if possible.

seburn is right (insert FULL STOP here)

Ever notice that it is the panels, not the Yagi's or the pathetic Omni's-with-enough-cable-to-hobble-a-herd-of-horses that gets sold out to the last unit at iBurst, time and time again? (As is presently the case, and which will probably stay the case thanks to iBurst's hellbent stance of "We are phasing out panel antennas no matter what!"

Ever wonder why Phoenixnet isn't manufacturing Yagi's or Omni's, but panels?

Come on, guess...
