We have changed my mother's contract from topUp135 to pay-as-you go because she never managed to use the R135 airtime each month.

Hence, there is like R600 accumulated on the SIM card which will now expire at the end of April...

VC don't let you transfer airtime, I can't buy SMS bundles with it...

What can I do with it?!

Convert it to a data bundle and use your cell as modem and connect to tah Intarwebz and save some of your Telkom cap.

Can I buy the data bundle from that SIM and then use a different phone with a different SIM to access the internet? Or does it get linked to that SIM?

Yes, only on that SIM. What SP are you MTN/Vodacom? Just take out the sim card, put it the other phone and connect. Of course before all this you should first phone in and follow some voice prompts to switch your airtime over to a data bundle. And of course you need to install the cell's software to be able to use it as a modem. I'd also recommend using a USB cable to link the phone to the computer. Bluetooth is a bitch.

EDIT: Oh I almost forgot. Be prepared to wait at least 2 hours for the service to be activated. In truth you will probably wait until midnight before it comes online.

Krikey!

I am not sure how well that is going to work. The only 3G phone I have is the one I use and I need to keep the SIM in there the whole time and not switch back and forth...

I am on VC btw.

Can't believe they don't allow me to send the airtime to another number on the same contract even... :(

Find another phone to put your SIM into for the time. Load up 2gigs bundle. Smoke the bundle. Put SIM back.

If necessary do that at night so that the chance of incoming calls is slim.

I guess that is all that I can do. Better than the airtime going to waste I guess.

So the bundle is always linked to the SIM hey? So there is nothing I can do with the airtime that I can transfer anywhere else, like to a different SIM?

Bundles are link to the phone #. TopUp airtime can't be transferred afaik. An extra 2gigs and permission to smoke it in 2 days can't be that tragic...

Ya, it is not tragic. It is just a mission and not what I actually want to do with the airtime, but then what customers actually want is never really at the top of the list I suppose .

You actually dnt know what to do with yo airtime? R u s-e-r-i-o-u-s? Data bundles, WiniKhaya competition, call your family and friends during peak hours - and the AT is up!!

Data bundles discussed above...

Have no one I really need to call...

This WiniKhaya sounds promising though

*investigates...

Anyone know of any charities that one can donate to via sms? Like where you sms some where and then it costs like R30 which is donated to charity or whatever...

Play USSD games, dial *120*777# (R1.67 an entry).
Check here

You'll win airtime, your winnings can be transferred to another sim with normal airtime transfer.

Of course the house always wins and you'll lose more than you'll win, but it's better than letting it expire and you'll have a bit of fun doing it.

Nice, I shall give this a go.

Turns out the airtime only expires at the end of this month so I still have some to play with :)

Terms & Conditions

Smartcall competitions are open to all Vodacom mobile contract and prepaid subscribers in South Africa, however winnings can only be paid to Vodacom prepaid subscribers.
Should a Vodacom-contract subscriber win, he/she will be sent an SMS (after entering & winning for the first time) requesting a nominated Vodacom prepaid number for the winnings to be recharged to.
All current and future winnings will be recharged to this nominated number, until the number is changed upon request from the original subscriber.
The nominated number can be changed by calling Smartcall Customer Care on
(011) - 507 4789 or by sending an SMS containing ONLY the new nominated prepaid number to 082 007 0720.
Example: Send "0820000000" to 082 007 0720 to change your prepaid nomination to 0820000000.
Competition Entries are R1.67 per entry for all Smartcall Competitions
Winnings are usually recharged within 15 minutes from receiving the winning entry to the prepaid Vodacom winner, or the prepaid Vodacom nominee of a contract/non-Vodacom subscriber.
When a contract winner nominates a prepaid number for his/her winnings for the FIRST TIME, the outstanding (pending) winnings will be recharged within 24 hours, however all winnings from entries occurring AFTER the nomination of the prepaid number will usually be recharged within 15 minutes after the winning entry was received.

:confused::confused:

By me it just credits the phone's account, on contract...

Hi, guess the T&C were written pre introduction of topup, will make them aware.
Apologies for misleading you.
Here is another service that's probably closer to what you need. http://www.smartcall.co.za/loadABuddy.shtml
"SMS the prepaid number you want to recharge to 39745
R12 will be loaded to that number by Vodacom (SMS Cost R15, incl the R12 airtime) "
R15 airtime for R12, you lose a bit in the process, but it's better than losing it all to expiry.
If that doesn't work for you, that's it, I'm all out of bright ideas. ;)
