Back in the days on the beloved dialup, the one thing that actually worked was MsnMessenger which was really good cos i have lots of mates with whom i stay in touch that way.

Since getting dsl i cant get it to work for any decent period of time, not for love or money.

The problem seems to be worst when i have local only bandwidth. Sometimes it connects me then disconnects the whole time. Sometimes, like the last two days i cant connect at all! :(

Programs i have tried to no avail:

WindowsMessenger
MsnMessenger 7.2
Trillian
Jabber

Have tried all these, also using the openbrowse proxy settings and nothing works!

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what i can do??

I am at my wit's end!

Any input would be much appreciated!!

*edit. I am using xp pro, no service pack. Have a 192k line, if thats of any interest to anyone...

thats normal, msn works fine when you have international bandwidth, but when you down to local only sometimes it works and sometimes it doesnt. its like browsing an international site after you capped on IS, sometimes you can and sometimes you cant.

when im capped international what i normally do is unplug the modem from the pc, wait a while, plug it in again so i get a new IP and then try. sometimes this gives me access to international at proper speeds. doesn't always work the first time, sometimes i have to attempt two or three different IP's, and sometimes i give up after eight or nine attempts and try again the next day. changing the IP a few times would be the best bet, but be sure to check that the IP has actually changed after reconnecting the modem. if it hasnt then wait a little longer before reconnecting the modem

Ok thanks for the suggestions...

I do hear a lot of other people struggle with msn when they dont have international bandwidth. I will give that a shout. Only problem with ip reset is that i am nearing 40 gigs on IS and live in constant fear of the cap :(

lol thats what we have to live with. look at a 1gig webafrica prepaid account for R75. and it doesn't expire at the end of the month, its valid until its finished. so should be fine for browsing and msn once IS international is capped.

Yeah MSN connects to UK servers if I'm correct. I once had that problem but it went away (on SAIX ADSL) - it just used to disconnect at random times.

Has it just happened with this version of MSN? 'cause I got MSN 8 beta and it's working like a charm.

Also a good idea :)

Yeah i have done this and it was working fine till a few days ago, now the transport doesnt even work! :(

Don't worry. The transport is fscked over here as well.

Same, my jabber msn transport hasn't worked for the past few days

I have a serious issue with IS and msn - I can't access hotmail while on IS

no matter what i do i cannot get it to load. i eventually have to switch to a saix acc to check what spam awaits me

Anyone else experiencing this?

I think I can offer you way out of the darkness, if not an actual solution: at a site I recently worked at, that client complained bitterly of no access to hotmail and they're on ISDSL. The tech who (I'm told) figured the problem out told me that it's (of all things!) an MTU setting!

..maybe try futzing around with that for now; 'n I can go back there and get the actual MTU they're using, and report back..?

I'm now using the transport over at jabber.obsidian.co.za
Works like a charm! :)

Thanks i'll try that. My current router's MTU is at 1492, i'll try changing it to 1500 and see what happens.

Still nothing... Would be a real help if you could get those MTU settings for me, it really sucks having to change to SAIX everytime i wanna check mail..

No need, changed my router's MTU to 1000 and I now log on to hotmail perfectly :D

I'll try and fine tune my MTU to find the highest value i can still acces hotmail and report back
