Hi all

Can anyone help me get to use the local news servers using the local cap portion of my Cybersmart account?

I get the following error message (Same for IS and SAIX)

Configuration:
Account: news.cybersmart.co.za
Server: news.cybersmart.co.za
Protocol: NNTP
Port: 119
Secure(SSL): 0
Code: 800ccc0e

However I can connect to international servers?

Any suggestions?

Do cybersmart have a news server srebrne? since when?

news.cybersmart.co.za resolves to the same IP as news.saix.net. It's the same as Axxess advertising thier news server address as news.axxess.co.za - they both just end up at the SAIX news server :)

The what is the diffs? We cant connect to the newsserver!

But I use www.bitfarm.co.za [torrents] with cybersmarts 20GB.

To get it to work just change the incoming connections port to 8080 this will help to stop port shapping and allso will allow you to use torrents on the Canexstender that cybersmart have.! :D:D I finished my 20GB in a week!

That's funny, because I can download from the SAIX news server with my Cybersmart account, and no, I am not joking :)

Thanks 'Dog

But alas one now needs a much revered invitation.

Just a question, with regards to the changing of the port to 8080, where does one do that? Router / Firewall / Application?

And as for StoneCold, please explain how you are doing that?

Thanks and enjoy whats left of the turkey ;-)

Well, I didnt even change ports as cavedog did, using standard port 119. I use Grabit to connect to the SAIX news server and use news.saix.net as server. And basically, thats that. Didnt do anything else special.

I must assume then that some accounts are shaped and others not. Possibly when I changed from @cybersmart.co.za to @adsl.cybersmart.co.za ?

Any thoughts?

Check www.bitfarm.co.za and read the bottom line ;)

Sorry Loot, but .....

After clicking the link bottom line, you get the following:

Sorry

Eish ! You missed it by like 2 days  Sorry bud...

Hmmm. I was talking about changing you port in Utorrent or your torrent client you are using. Azureus or what ever. Check in the connection settings!

Right so back to my original question.

WTF can I do with the 20 Gig local? There must be some way of connecting to at least one of the local news servers? I have had no joy with Cybersmart's Help Desk. The bloke who knows about news is on leave and the kid I chatted to had never ever worked with news or nntp. So I assume I must wait for the brains to return.

But any ideas where the stumbling block is?

I am using (or at least trying) Outlook Express or Grabit, XP via a Netgear DG834G on Cybersmart. And CAN NOT connect to IS / SAIX or CYBERSMART news [unable to connect] BUT can connect to news.readfreenews.net and others [port 119].

Is this a "Shaping" issue?

Well how I see it, since the IP of news.cybersmart.co.za is the same as news.saix.net I rate forget about the IS server :) Then in GrabIt, make sure by the server setup that you have news.saix.net on port 119 with username and password blank.

If you have all that and it still doesn't work then I do not know :(

Sometimes I get errors in using the servers, and they are simply my firewall denying access to my news reader to resolve DNS ... It's sporadic, sometimes it happens sometimes not :p

Well when I emailed Cybersmart about their capextender a while back, they told me that it wasn't part of the IS or SAIX network and that it was not part of your normal account. If it isn't then obviously you won't be able to authenticate on either news server.

P2P was also restricted they said but you can probably get around that by changing ports as cave dog has done though you will struggle to find any worthwhile p2p locally besides private torrent sites.

to be real honest I finished my 20GB local in a week. @ bitfarm.co.za so that is where I use my local.

An update from the chaps at Cybersmart:

The issue is that server points to SAIX nntp server which restricts access to ADSL accounts on their circuit only. We will have this sorted by the end of the week.

Cybersmart has still not fixed this problem, they have now indicated that it may be resolved next week sometime, but are still not prepared to tell me what they are doing. They have happily billed me for Dec (but I had no access to the newsgroups) and also for Jan (They have not convinced me that they can resolve my issue).

So I am on the hunt for some new providers. I guess a combo would be best. Around 5 Gig International and a seperate 20 Gig Local. I want to be able to use International only when I specify. So any suggestions on who has newsgroup access on their local offering?

5GB saix openweb is R239 i think - cheapest and then 30gig local from openweb is R130, cant fault mr beep and his boys in any way, brilliant service.
