How To De-Brand a Vodacom/Vodafone Nokia N97 and Get The Latest Nokia Firmware:

Please remember you do this at your own risk....you could “brick” your phone. (There are ways to fix that, apparently, but it’s not covered here)

Preferably do this on a Windows XP Pro (32 bit) Laptop (with a fully charged battery).

1. Ensure your phone’s battery is fully charged.
2. Ensure you have a FULL backup of your phone (contacts, pictures, audio etc) as this will be lost! Also, some applications you installed may also be lost, just reinstall them after the update.
3. Ensure you have Nokia Software Updater (NSU) installed as part of the Nokia OVI Suite. (www.nokia.co.za or OVI Disk that came with phone)
4. Connect your phone and set it to “PC Suite” mode at least once after installing OVI Suite. (This installs phone drivers and cable drivers needed.)
5. Get and install NSS (http://www.b-phreaks.co.uk/index.php?main_page=page_2) (I used version 1.0.38.15)
6. Reboot your PC after NSS installation, just for good measure.
7. Hard Reset your phone to ensure there will be no conflicting software on it… (See point 22 below, how to hard reset)
8. Once the phone is on again, connect it via USB port (can use Bluetooth, USB is more stable and reliable) and put it in "PC Suite" mode.
9. Do not open OVI or PC Suite or any other Nokia software. (If any are open, close them…)
10. Open NSS software. On the far right, click "scan for new device".
11. Now click on "Phone Info" and then "Scan".
12. Click the "Read" button now.
13. To the right you should see your phone's current "Product Code", it should be 0585732 (For Vodacom SA)
14. Click the "Enable" checkbox next to the code.
15. Enter the following code in the box: 0576559 (This is the product code for MTN South Africa phones.)
16. Click "Write".
17. Click "Read" again, to confirm that the new code was written.
18. Close NSS and go to NSU.
19. Run the update from Nokia, you should see that you have V10 and that V12 is available. Do the update. (Depending on your Internet connection speed, this part downloads 145MB, so it could take a couple of minutes…)
20. It should complete and the phone should reboot and you should have V12 running with no problems.
21. If your phone keeps rebooting itself (switching on and off, on and off), Hard Reset it again…

22. How To Hard Reset:
• Remove the battery from your phone for 10 seconds, then put it back.
• DON’T SWITCH ON THE PHONE!
• Open the slider to show the keyboard
• Hold the left shift + space + backspace and switch the phone on (while still holding down all the buttons mentioned)
• The phone will switch on, show the Nokia sign for a while, now release the buttons, it will then restart.

That’s it, you are now free from Vodacom's inability to release software, provide any sort of customer service, and most importantly, ENJOY your awesome N97!! (Oh, that’s if you don’t mind the camera lens scratch itself... :-)

Oh, and no more “Vodafone” “Yebo gogo” crap on your phone! How cool is that! ;)

Enjoy V12, and any new releases that Vodacom will not be releasing because they suck!

:D :D :D

Howzit braam, can you please do me such a tutorial for a samsung U900 I have the U900V its got the vodafone firmware.

Sorry, dont have that model to play with... just search for it on the web... there are hundreds of forums about this stuff...

if I can just add my 2c...

I have changed the product code and on many Nokia S60 phones and NSS along with Nokia Software updater is a solid reliable option...

Its really is hard to make a stuff-up...

Just be sure that ur phone is fully charged...have a solid internet connection and once the software updates starts do not fiddle with the PC,let it do its thing...;)

By the way, this method works on almost all modern models of Nokia, it's an old tried and tested solution that's been around since NSU has been around. Keep in mind, Vodacom will not honour any warranty in it's current state and you should revert back to original product code after you've done your upgrade. Of course, they can find out that the upgrade was done in this manner and probably won't honour the warranty anyways.

WELL DONE BRAAMM!!! GLAD U ARE NOW FREE, NOT DOM :) FREEEE-DOM FROM VODACOM.

Just a question... u see I connect to the internet using my N97 as a modem for the PC.. but it disconnects very often and my Nokia PC Updater doesnt work either :(

U think I can update via the software updater icon on the phone itself? or by dialling *#0000# and updating from there?

If Im not mistaken the phones software updater instructs you to use a pc with OVI suite so its not "over the air" like the other upgrades

145MB downloaded over your phone?
Rather find someone who's already done the update on the their own PC, copy the firmware update files from their NSU update folder and paste them into your PC's same location. Run NSU and it'll find the local update files and do the update without a need to download. It will however connect to NSU to see if there's a newer version than the local version.

Nice tutorial braamm!

With the N95 I found the MTN SA firmware was also a bit behind.
Or just take it to Nokia to have it debranded?
Soon after getting my N95 I took it in to the Nokia agents for a firmware upgrade, later I found they had just changed the product code to a generic South Africa code and left it that way.

How sure are you that Vodacom won't honour the warranty?
If the Nokia agents don't change the product code back, I don't believe it's necessary.

I found Nokia's 'Can I Update?' page useful. You can see which firmware version a particular product code will give you before actually changing the code with NSS.

I got a data bundle, so the 145MB is not really a prob... just wanna know if it is possible to do it directly off the phone, no pc involved. Cos my NSU doesnt work either, just gives an error message that some components are missing, even after I have reinstall. I'm using vista btw..

hi guys

this is the best ever hope when i get mine next month on upgrade this will really help me keep it up guys and stuff Vodacome :p

I havent done a FW update directly from the phone, but under settings there is a place to "do it". Although im not sure that it will actually do it.

I used Windows 7 to do my update, and still recommend WinXP.

Not sure why your NSU doesnt work...

I got my phone on Saturday with version 10 installed from Vodacom.

Just installed all the goodies on the Pc ( OVI etc )
Tried to to a software update and BAM, picked up version 12 and updated it. Took around 10 minutes to complete with the 149.2mb download and everything.

WTF? So Voda finally came to light....

I see you have 12..026 whereas MTN has 12..024, any issues so far with your phone? Is the camera lens scratching?

Enjoy your phone!!!
