Using too much electricity?
Here’s how to save!
On your appliance you will see the number of WATTS that the appliance uses. This number is usually stamped
underneath or at the back of your appliance.
An iron for example uses 1 500 WATTS.
This is 1,5 KILOWATTS.
(To change WATTS to KILOWATTS move the comma three spaces to the left, i.e. 1 500 = 1,5 kilowatts)
You then multiply the number of KILOWATTS by the price of one unit of electricity, for example 40 cents.
(1,5 x 40 cents = 60 cents)
This is the cost of using an iron for 1 hour.
REMEMBER TO CHECK WHAT THE PRICE OF A KILOWATT HOUR (UNIT) IS IN YOUR AREA.
ELECTRICITY CONSUMPTION OF ELECTRICAL APPLIANCES

1 line = 100 watt. A frying pan therefore uses 1 500 watts (15 lines).
1 000 watt per hour = 1 kW.h = 1 unit of electricity.

How on earth does that post help you save?
It merely tells you what things use.

Here is how to save millions for your retirement:
/me goes on to list the cost of everything that costs money.

By knowing which appliance uses the most electricity you can save by putting it off.

your one of the most negative worst forum member on myadsl man

does nothing positive come outta your mouth

i say you should pack it in and move away man, you hate this country so much i think you just go man

pack it in and move china

personally jk8 i thought this post was helpful, i dont need to go around my house and see how many watts each appliance uses

lol ladies ladies ladies. don't be so harsh with JK8. he was merely trying to help us, which we all should be doing in a time of such crisis. the best way to save elec is to switch off appliances that you are not using. also, the appliances which uses the most elec are the ones that heat up things, such as kettles, heaters, toasters, geysers, stoves and tumble dryers. they consume the most elec so be sure to use them sparingly.

Do you people really believe the bull story about 'saving electricity' ?

As far as im concerned :

It is well known that you can not Save electricity. You can only generate it for usage, storage happens for a very limited time.

Industrial machinery uses thousands of times more electricity than homes, It is up to eskom to build more generators/plants and to stop using the residential electricity 'abuse' ploy to get customers to feel guilty about the crysis..

Chermobil (Interesting nickname, BTW)

It is true that commerce and industry uses a LOT more than residential, but every little bit helps.

If you switch off a couple of extra lights at home, run your poolpump a couple of hours less etc. etc., and use maybe 200kWh per month less, it won't save the country on it's own, but if a million households do the same, it will start to become significant.

And if you start developing and using a conservative approach to power usage at home, you'll start doing the same at work. So will the people you work with. All that adds up, and will help in the end.

Look at the bright side - if you use less power, you pay less!!

But I agree with you - it's not us at home trying to cook a meal and wash some clothes that are to blame for the whole situation. But we can either moan about it and do nothing, or try to make a small difference and get through this.

And BTW - I hate getting power cuts as much as the next person.....

You couldn't be more specific and more informative than that. I will be honest with you and I will tell you that I am scared to look for watts on my appliances, I have old appliances and my electric bills are higher and higher, I need to change that and this is an urgent matter. I need a greener life.

I have old appliances and my electric bills are higher and higher, I need to change that and this is an urgent matter. I need a greener life.

So then, how can I help you to achieve this end? Like I said before, I am here to help people. I enjoy helping people.

Furthermore you can read about my intentions in this section in a separate post.

kalie_b have a look at our website www.powersaving.co.za. We developed it specifically to help guys like you. We dont sell anything but just discuss different options etc. We list suppliers of products that may help as well.

Particularly look at the News section and the Appliance tests http://www.powersaving.co.za/index.php?q=con,51, Power Usage as well as our Top 10 tips.

It may help.

LED lights

Hello everybody,

What to do to save electricity? You can't change the power supply of your TV, or computer to a lower rated one. You can't change the element of your geyser or kettle to a lower one, it will only need more time to heat up the water. The only thing left that we can improve are lights. Yes, look up! Those bright thingies!

Why not change to LED lights? We have all seem them at the hardware shops, the brands of LO.... OS... and EU..... The most common comment is they are not bright enough. Correct! Those ones are not.

These ones are!!!
Please go to
www.c2r.co.za
to have a look at the range that is available in SA.

For example a fully dimmable fluorescent replacement tube that does not need a starter and ballast to work, although they will work with them. Or a fully dimmable globe.

6 Watt downlighters that give the same light as a 50 Watt halogen, in either the 12v or 220v versions. A 88% saving in electricity. The 12v version is dimmable because of the transformer.

There is also a 2 Watt downlighter that looks the same as the name brands from hardware stores, but this version gives more light, I have put them side by side in my bathroom. A 96% saving in electricity.

The lifspan is amazing:
Tube replacement is 80 000 hours.
6Watt downlighter is 30 000 hours.
BulbLED is 40 000 hours.

A little something to ponder: we have to stop thinking of LED lights as consumable items. Like toilet paper, we use it, its finished, we buy more. Same as tungsten and CFL lights, because their lifespan is so short. NOT LED's, they last too long.

The calculation is as follows:
Using a bulbLED (http://www.c2r.co.za/html/bulbs___do...s.html) (scroll down) outside your front door, at 40 000 hours for a LED, at 10 hours/day, 7 days/week = 10 years.
Now using a bulbLED as a bedside lamp at 1 hour/day, 7 days/week = 100 years.
Your grandchildren will use the LED's that you will buy.

Look at your light use habits at home, analyze what lights are on for longer periods
than other lights. Change the longer ON lights first, that will have the bigger, more immediate impact in reducing your electricity bill.

The more hours per day lights burn, the better LED's become.
The higher the Rand per KW hour is, the better LED's become.

Look around at night, how many lights are on. Chop that by 50%. Imagine that right now! Then put in occupancy sensors, that switch the lights off when nobody is around.
We have them, but they are very new to us. Watch the website for them.
Now combine LED's and occupancy sensors. Imagine that electricity saving!

Yes they are expensive, but calculating a total cost of ownership
the lights will save you money in the end.

For the environment friendly people, remember
that LED's contain NO Mercury.

Imagine SA wihout any loadshedding.
Applications exist for any situation, Industrial, Commercial,

Precisely davemc...

And I'm even looking at ways of removing my dependence on Eskoms network entirely.. thankfully its a lot easier for me, I just shift my data center stuff overseas... and hell if I need a Call Centre....India is looking like a damn good option atm...

this message will be in more than one thread!

hooooooooooooooooooo boy people!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
*** en betaal is die wet van transvaal!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

http://www.businessday.co.za/articles/Content.aspx?id=79333

if i understand the first para correctly, WE ARE GOING TO GET ESKOM OUT OF THE RED!!!!!!!

how about cutting down your electricity account by changing your lights to LED lights,
and in the process giving eskom less money per month?

LED lights SAVE MORE ENERGY than "energy saving" bulbs.
