BHP Billiton(Bayside) vs RioTinto Alcan(Koega)

Are there double standards here? BHP Billiton have announced the pending closure of Bayside Aluminium's B AND C potlines due to there not being enough power to continue operating effectively. This would mean a loss of 400 permanent workers and about 1200 contract workers.

Yet and the same time, the goverment give assurances to RioTinto Alcan's Koega smelter (still to be built!) that they will be able to supply electricity to them creating 1000 permanant jobs.

"Robbing Peter to pay Paul" comes to mind. Many small business will fold if BHP Billiton's Bayside smelter closes these potlines. Very sad and Eskom feel feathers!:mad::mad:
 
Billiton is quite a huge outfit if I'm not mistaken, so don't be phased by this, they've got Billions to back them up. Sure it's job losses and creation, but they'll move on ;)

Not too worried about BHP Billiton, quite correct, they are huge. Im more concerned for the staff loss and the impact it will have on the businesses in Richards Bay. B and C potlines are older technology, some staff have been there since it all started. Very bad for our local economy here in the bay.
