Perhaps this might answer some questions...

"We don't call it broadband," he says. "This is high-speed internet."

Neotel expects to launch what it calls "true broadband" with it fibre rollout to consumers in the months to come.

To those customers who are heavy users, Sharma says that "data caps are history".

The company's executives are quick to stress that this is "just the start". As of today, coverage only exists in parts of Johannesburg and Pretoria, but this is growing daily. Testing is underway on Neotel's Cape Town and Durban networks and consumers can expect rollout in those areas in the next few weeks. Neotel MD Ajay Pandey says that the size of the network will "virtually double" in the "next 30 days".

Sources close to Telkom say the incumbent will unveil comparative services and pricing for its DSL offerings at its annual results on June 9. Telkom files its tariff changes to Icasa in August every year. Muller agrees that the pressure is now on Telkom to match or even undercut these packages. As for the mobile broadband providers like Vodacom and MTN, he says they "can't match this easily". He is "highly doubtful" they would be able to be competitive at these prices.

I suspicious of this fibre roll-out to customers thing. Do they mean an actual fibre line right into your house...as in no last mile? Seems too good to be true...

Now this will be interesting. The outcome will or will not make a lot of clients move to Noetel.

Data caps history? Fibre roll-out to customers? If they stick to this, the future may be bright, but just like gregmcc said: "The outcome will or will not make a lot of clients move to Noetel." I'll wait and see, but the current Neotel "uncapped" or high usage pricing is still way out...

The pressure is building.

If your house is on the route of one of their cables you wont need the last mile (Telkom failed LLU project) of copper.

If you have had numerous companies digging up your drive way and dropping plastic tubes in the ground then you will probably be able to get your very own up link :)

I am pretty fortunate to even be able to chose my fiber ISP. Since 4 different cables run in front of my house (Rivonia road, Sandton). Neotel confirmed that they would dig to my front door for no extra charge whilst MTN wants R1000 per meter.!

Neotel will dig up to your house but they still want R25k (once off) for the "connection" and another R36k monthly for a minimum connection speed of 2Mb (2Mb local/512kb int.). All the cables run the length of my office in Rosebank and Neotel want's R25k, Telkom want me to take 10Mb per month to connect and MTN didn't bother sending me any info. All I want is a 2Mb fibre link. :(

I think your house price just shot up by a 1000% :D

I get the funny here -- but I honestly think that where the fibre goes is going to make a BIG difference to a lot of people and honestly to property prices -- especially in rural areas when it gets there.

Whatever happens with NEOTEL I think that the rest of this year and next year is going to be VERY interesting. I am led to believe that the sleeping dinosaur is going to give everyone a real "snotklap" wake up. Something about aces up sleeves -- like 8Mb & Fibre to the desktop.

But what do I know -- it is not yet Midnight and my spells are no working yet :D:D:D

I spoke to a friend at Telkom today regarding my more then a year wait for ADSL, and he also mentioned to me that something is going to be announced by Telkom on the 9 June...

He joked and said maybe it's a good thing I got delayed so long to get my ADSL connection, because now it will be cheaper...

Who knows, but the war seem to have started.

Telkom has to lower their prices and/or increase their bandwidth caps.

If Neotel has better service (which we are lead to believe), quicker install times and larger bandwidth caps for less R's, Telkom will loose many customers.
