My writers already had the Firmware 1.05 but i tried yours upgrade anyway
but still no difference
records for 20secs & bombs,please help.I paid $35.00 (AUSTRALIAN) for each writer.Is there another aussie writer i could try or is there someway i could change the firmware to SL40? any help would be muchly appreciated
PS after this issue is resolved i have some good stories about upgrading the Hard Drive in a LG 5402P High Definition Set Top Box which actually worked

As you noted previously, the GSA-H55N does not use the SL40 firmware, so it won't help in this case. To check your current firmware, do either of the following (depends on your model)
HOW TO CHECK FIRMWARE VERSION AND REGION CODE.
1) Press HOME on remote the go to SETUP
2) Navigate onto the "TV" icon and select it, then select "DISPLAY FORMAT", go onto "16:9" without selecting it
3) Press 1 3 9 7 1 3 9 buttons and then ENTER
or
1) Press HOME on remote the go to SETUP
2) Navigate onto the "TV" icon and select it, then select "DISPLAY FORMAT", go onto "16:9" without selecting it
3) Press 4 5 6 2 5 8 0 buttons and then ENTER
or
1) Press HOME on remote the go to SETUP
2) Navigate to the padlock icon without selecting it
3) Press 7 8 8 9 buttons and then ENTER
What discs are you trying to record on - DVD-R, DVD+R, RW's or RAM?
Please don't rush this - I know it's very long, but you must follow all the steps - it took a while for me to do this the first time, but it was worth it.
I just swopped out the optical drives again to try a few things to see what the problem could be:
- I have the jumper on the "Master" on the H55N
- hooked up the H55N optical drive to my PC on the Primary IDE channel as a single drive (I have a SATA HDD, so my boot-HDD is not on my IDE connectors - if you only have IDE, the hook up the H55N to the Secondary IDE channel on it's own)
- flashed the installed H55N drive with the
SpeedPatched v1.05 Firmware that I created from info I'd gathered from various forums, using MCSE - in the RAR is the flasher "exe" file and the firmware "bin" file - unpack and run the "exe" file when your H55N drive is connected to the PC
- Once flashed, reboot the PC and run the "exe" file again to confirm your firmware version has been updated (or check in your Windows Device Manager in Control Panel)
- unhook the H55N from the PC after powering off the PC and install the H55N back into the RH1999 unit. Keep the jumper on the "Master" setting.
VERY IMPORTANT - DO NOT PRESS THE EJECT BUTTON ON THE GSA-H55N OPTICAL DRIVE AS THIS WILL CAUSE PROBLEMS - ONLY USE THE RH1999'S REMOTE OR EJECT BUTTON ON THE TOP PANEL
- Once installed back into the RH1999, you need to update the RH1999 bios, as follows:
First you need to download the
60911A BIOS file here and save it to your desktop.
- Unpack the RAR file to your desktop and you should have an info text file and a file named "LG_HDR_UPDATE.004" available - you can ignore the text file, as the info is partly below.
-- You will now need to create a BIOS Update CD using NERO if possible (any version should be fine)
1) use a blank CD-RW - do a
full format of the disc to make sure that it's blank; (it's also easier if you make an error - can blank it again)
2) create an
ISO CD-ROM with only one session;
3) use
ISO-9660 mode; select
31 characters file name length;
4) label the CD as "
RH1000_UP"; --
this is important
5) burn just the file
LG_HDR_UPDATE.004 that you downloaded above;
6) burn with
DAO (disc-at-once) mode at a
slow speed (2x or 4x) and finalise the disc;
7) when this is done, power on the RH1999 and insert the CD in the loader tray when it's ready;
8) press "Home" button on the remote and go to "Music > Disc" - the tray should close and read the disc;
9) follow the instructions the recorder shows (...you have to press REC and so on as directed...)
10) after the upgrade has been completed (
please wait a while and be sure of this as it can take a while!), turn off the recorder.
You will now have exactly the same settings that I have on my RH1999 and the installed H55N optical drive - the Firmware and BIOS are now in sync.
Next, you need to test the units.
Use a blank DVD-+RW or a DVD-RAM disc (I used a DVD-RAM disc as I use these for recording to disc)
- power up the RH1999 again
- press the "DVD" button on the remote so the unit selects the DVD mode instead of the HDD mode
- insert the blank disc and format/initialise it in VR mode ready for recording (it may prompt you automatically to initialise if the disc is totally blank - say yes)
- eject it when done but leave the disc in the loader tray, then close the tray again with the disc still in
- wait for it to read and become ready - you may get the disc/recording capacity screen info once it's done
- once the unit is ready, power off with the disc still in the closed tray
- wait a few minutes (3-4) for the HDD to wind-down properly, then power-up again. The RH1999 should power up in the DVD mode, read the inserted disc, initialise the mode and disc, then it should be ready for recording.
Once it's ready and finished with the above, try recording a clip and see if it works. I have mine set on "XP" for high quality, and it works fine - I just tested it...
Let me know what happens. If you still cannot get it to record to disc, leave the disc in the loader, change the record mode to HDD, and record a bit with that - then swap back to DVD mode and try again.
If that still does not work, then I would either take the unit to LG to reset or check, or I would just go and buy an original replacement GSA-4164 from their spares department.
