I know not many of you regular readers out there don't know much about spectrum issues. But i will try to explain to my best how ICASA has damaged the handing out of Spectrum to a few operators and is now trying to correct their past mistakes by allocating 6 Potential operators spectrum in the Wimax Band.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Vodacom - 20 mhz 900 Band GSM ( 10mhz Uplink and 10mhz Downlink )
30 mhz2100 Band UMTS ( 15mhz uplink and 15mhz Downlink )

MTN - 15 mhz 900 Band GSM ( 7.5mhz Uplink and 7.5mhz Downlink )
20 mhz 1800 Band GSM ( 10 mhz Uplink and 10mhz Downlink )
30 mhz 2100 Band UMTS ( 15mhz Uplink and 15mhz Downlink )

Cell-C 40mhz 1800 Band GSM ( 20mhz uplink and 20mhz Downlink )
5mhz 900 Band GSM ( 2.5mhz uplink and 2.5mhz Downlink )

Telkom - 20mhz 1800 Band GSM ( 10mhz Uplink and 10mhz Downlink )
30mhz 2100 Band UMTS ( 15mhz uplink and 15mhz Downlink )

While the above information will not mean much to the uninformed.
The information below will give you an idea of what went Wrong !
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
900mhz - GSM Band = 50mhz of Available Spectrum available - Uplink & Downlink Combined. 10mhz is required to setup a national mobile network for a Single Operator Uplink & Downlink. Thus with 50 mhz available 5 Operators can be sustained in this band alone.

1800mhz - GSM Band = 150mhz of Available Spectrum available - Uplink & Downlink Combined. 30mhz is required to setup a national mobile network for a Single Operator Uplink & Downlink . Thus with 150 mhz available 5 Operators can be sustained in this band alone.

2100mhz - UMTS Band = 120mhz of Available Spectrum available - Uplink & Downlink Combined. 20mhz is required to setup a national mobile network for a Single Operator Uplink & Downlink. Thus with 120 mhz available 6 Operators can be sustained in this band alone.

2600mhz - Wimax Band = 180mhz of Available Spectrum available - Uplink & Downlink Combined. 30mhz is required to setup a national mobile network for a Single Operator Uplink & Downlink. Thus with 180 mhz available 6 Operators can be sustained in this band alone.

This is based on international Norms of Allocation and the Spectrum required to run a proper mobile network with Spectrum to Cover Roll Out with Re-use and Proper Cell planning.

Uncovering and Exposing The TruTH

Well I just hope they can fix it. And thanks for all the info. May not have understood all of it but learned something from it.

ICASA must Refarm all the Frequencies and Re-Allocate

ICASA must Refarm all the Frequencies and Re-Allocate the available spectrum to new operators and allow for Competition to flourish.

Wireless at all Bands is the Future !

We need Real Good competition !

We are Slaves to MTN , Vodacom & Telkom !

And will continue to be like that for Along Time To Come !
