Had enough of crap latencies with HSDPA even with brilliant coverage for MTN and Vodacom? Have no decent internet connection? Try WiMAX!

What is WiMAX?
- WiMAX is Telkoms wireless ADSL. It has the same latencies as ADSL with a min/max line connection speed of 512KB.

How do I go about ordering WiMAX?
- Call 10217 > Press 1 > Press 1 again and you will go through to a consultant. Tell them you would like to order WiMAX. They will ask for personal details and your residential address (to make sure you have coverage) then they will have somebody call you within 24 hours.

How much is the once off install cost? What do I get?
- The install cost R543.89. For this price Telkom have contractors come and install the WiMAX antenna, you get an IDU and a network cable to your pc/router. Neither the IDU or antenna are yours. You merely rent it from Telkom.

With Telkom WiMAX do you pay R240 a month and thats it?
- Yes R240 is all you pay monthly to Telkom. This excludes your ISP vouchers that you get from axxess, openweb or SAINET.

Is it a contract, if so is it 12 months or 24 months, or can you get PAYG?
- No contract. Cancel whenever you want but you need to give 1 months notice.

Any hidden costs besides installation and monthly rental?
- So far I found nothing!

How do you cancel your WiMAX if it turns out to be a fail?
- Phone and cancel with 1 months notice. They then come and take back their antenna and IDU.

Who is the cheapest unshaped reseller of ADSL packages?
- Openweb, Axxess or SAINET.

Do I need a modem or router to use WiMAX?
- No all you need is an ethernet port (the point on a network card) and then create a standard dial-up (PPPOE) connection.

What are the expected latencies?
- They latencies are extremely low compared to HSDPA and are slightly higher than ADSL at times which still makes it perfect for online gaming via xbox live or pc gaming. Here are a few ping result sets:

R240 is not your only cost, you still have to pay for a service provider, there is no contract or hidden cost besides installation and you can cancel at anytime, as for the cheapest just Google ADSL service providers in South Africa. I use SAINET and its R139 for 3gig @ 512k:)

I don't think there will be any reason to cancel because WIMAX might fail, if you have done any amount of reading on these forums you'll notice that WIMAX is brilliantly stable;)
 
Thanks for the info Norm!. I'm not to worried about ISP costs since its prepaid and those I can get out of easily without legal issues.

And yeah I'm gonna take the plunge now. Time to phone and order :D
 
Sweet, Just placed the order.

Called 10217 > Pressed 1 > Pressed 1 again and got through to a consultant. Gave her my address etc and so far no issues. I have coverage in my area and since there are no free ports on the exchange for ADSL I can get it.

I was told I should get a call in 24 hours from a lady (have name etc of everyone) who will give me a reference number etc.

Some other notes:
- Norm was correct, its not a time based contract, although you cannot skip a months payment if you decide you not going to use WiMAX.
- If you wish to cancel there are no fees involved you just need to give a months notice.
- When you cancel they come and remove the antenna and setup etc... so re-activating it will required installation fees again.

Will keep this thread updated on the progress of the install :)

Correct!!;) its not a time based contract, all you have to do is make your monthly payments. Also, no cancellation fees, they do come take away the CPE though, it is rented from Telkom not owed by you:)
 
Oh and then you can also get rid of your landline...hehe
 
Do I need to go and buy router/modem or can I just plug the RJ-45 directly into my 1GB onboard lan port and create a normal dialup connection like I do with HSDPA? I use internet connection sharing for online gaming.
 
I assume you will be able to do that.

It plugs directly into your onboard lan, all you need to do is set up a PPPOE connection or you can buy a router!!!!:p

Thanks Norm, although you deserve most of the credit since most of that info I got from you and Muffen Man ;)

I think it's about time there was a sticky with all the required info from about the product to ordering it etc... including all the FAQ's and the rest.

I'm still doing some research on the prepaid bandwidth side of things but as soon as I have all the info I will add it to the first post. Then maybe a moderator can merge the main topics or create a new one with all the info from multiple topics and sticky it.

What else should I add? Any FAQ's you can think of?
 
Only thing I can think of is using Axxess as a local Bandwidth provider, I use it with Route Sentry and it works well @ R48 per 4 gig local in conjunction with SAINET'S R139 for 3 gig international:)
 
Just got a call from a Telkom representative to confirm my WiMAX application. Again my personal details where confirmed and I was asked if I would like Telkom to be my ISP. I said no. I was told the installation is done by a 3rd party and the complete setup is normally done within a month.

Then I confirmed all costs and I was told the installation price is R543.89 and NOT R490 as advertised on the Telkom website and what I was told by the first customer rep that I spoke to yesterday. http://www.telkom.co.za/athome/products/wimax/cost.html still has the cost at R490. Apparently it went up at the start of August. I emailed Telkom a print screen along with the explanation of my issue. I said I am only will to pay the advertised price of R490.

I just received my reference number via SMS.
 
I requested my WiMax last week and during confirmation of installation they also said R490.00, nowhere is there any indication of price increases and you can nail them for False Advertising... Let us know what the outcome is of your price query please...

I agree,If they say R490 then R490 it is................;)
 
I ordered my Wimax last week, and also asked for confirmation of the costs - R490 is what they said.... so now I'm expecting a bit of a surprise with the first bill. Unless someone is taking some installation money on the slide...
 
Also, they can't say that R490 is excl. VAT as the main figure should've then been R558.60... I agree with EdBundy, perhaps somebody is trying to make something on the side...

Does anyone know what the 3rd party company's name is that does the installations for Telkom's WiMax? If we can get hold of them or even if they have a website, we can just follow up with them exactly what the situation is regarding the "new" installation prices if last said is really so...
 
I will ask the guys when the come do my installation. I won't pay more than R490 for the install as that was the advertised price, and still is.
