My first attempt was Webafrica's ADSL 512kbps uncapped express. Instant setup, no contract, and using my own router, so plus points for that. Then I find out that the threshold on their website isn't 30gb over 10 days, it's 10gb over 10 days. Minus points there, but they've changed the website on my request to be clearer.

However, even being rate limited to 256kbps during the day is fine, because after 8pm I can get the full 4mbps unshaped, which is fantastic, but that's not the official stance, so they'll probably shut that down eventually.

My second attempt was Imagine's 512kbps dyndns uncapped. The line is limited to 512kbps, probably on the router they supply, and the speeds are a crappy 256kbps during the day even on work-related sites, but after 5pm I get 512kbps to all sites which is great, but not as brilliant as 4mbps.

Now I'm stuck. Do I cancel the Imagine account and take the punishment of wasting money on the setup fee and a calendar month notice to go back to the glorious uncapped Webafrica account, only to have them lock down the accounts to 512kbps, or stick with Imagine who provide only what they've advertised?

Service and support from both companies has been excellent, so that's not a deciding factor for me, especially compared to the joke that is Allyoucaneat.co.za.

Has a 12 month contract on their uncapped and is limited to 512kbps just like Imagine except it's R400 more a month. I want something like Webafrica, where I can get 4mbps after hours and they won't suddenly block it. I guess they're all at the mercy of IS who can just randomly change their policies.

Well. If WebAfrica is giving you the 4MB during off-peak, and it doesnt have a contract. Why did you go with the Imagine one anyway?

Yea, give them the boot. Cut your losses, and go for WA.

Long story, but the WA website said 30gb threshold over 10 days, so I interpreted that as 90gb a month at full speed with no rate limiting. Then I got rate limited at 12gb and got pissed off, thinking that I'd be stuck at 256kbps the rest of the month, because the website says nothing about rate limiting being switched off after hours.

So in my frustration I cancelled the WA account, and signed up with Imagine only to find that the speed is as bad as the rate limited WA one. Then I decided to try the WA account again, as it is only being switched off at the end of the month, and I realised I was getting 4mbps after hours.

Hence my dilemma. WA don't promise 4mbps after hours (well, IS don't), so how long before they clamp down on that? Cancelling Imagine and going back to WA will mean I waste R1664 thanks to the calendar month notice Imagine requires, and then if WA does limit the account I have to go back to Imagine and probably pay the R550 setup fee again.

Ah. But I mean, mentioning it is probably not a good thing, it kinda makes it open, then they might stop it. But that's besides the point at the moment.

But you are not getting what you need/want at the moment. So, the fact that you will lose the R1664 shouldnt play a part in your decision. UNLESS there is something you are getting from the Imagine option that you cannot get from WA, I don't see any point staying with them.

Well they'll eventually notice 50gb on a 30gb threshold, so it won't stay hidden for long.

Guess so. Maybe I can transfer the account to someone else who wants an uncapped Imagine account, someone who hasn't read this thread ;)

lol

Yea, sucks that they sucked all that money from you. But I think WA is the way to go for you man, even though its not exactly what you need, it seems the best of the two options

Yeah, I'm thinking that too. I just tested Skype on both connections and it's dropping out on Imagine and it's still 100% on rate limited WA. Think Imagine either isn't delivering the capacity I'm paying for or they've screwed up their traffic shaping.

South Africa invented Boerewors, Spietkoppe, Data Caps and now "rolling caps" and "rate limits" I spoke to ICASA the other day, and 2 chaps told me to submit a written complaint about this throtteling / rate limit issue. They say its not legal / fair.

Look at www.xdsl.co.za and what they offer uncap wise. Also VPN based, but they do seem more user friendly than the rest of them out there

Jerichau, you mentioned that you get the full 4Mbps unshaped after 8PM.
Does this last from 8PM all the way through to 8AM?

Mine does last from those times on my IS express uncapped. I assume it applies to all IS resold accounts

XDSL - fiber and shaped uncapped(low latency + fixed ip)
based on their own network/backbone its not subjected to any limits at all to usage and applications like p2p and torrents, but it comes with an international and local spit which starts as 75% of your speed to local and then remaining 25% to international. this can be changes as you can specify a 50-50 or 25-75 etc etc split. You can use your own router if it supports the whole setup, but a fee is required for the setup. Else must take a router from xdsl.

ex, 512 should be 128 for international and then 384 local...
