"spike" a flash drive ? Lost 2 drives (used an older, smaller one to confirm my problem :D) over the weekend. In both cases the PC picked up that there was "activity" from the usb port, then reported that it could read/access the hardware. Now both drives are not even seen by other PCs, as in completely dead

Could be something is shorting out, and power is hitting the data pins ?

We have crappy Mecer machines here at work, and have problems with the front USB connectors. I even fried my LCD display once by plugging something in. Don't know how...

Can definitely happen if VCC is flooding the data ports or its badly grounded

These are the front ones by the way. Only tried the one though...One drive was a 4GB one purchased 2 weeks ago at HiFiCorp. They replaced the "dead" drive with another one today :)

was the original pc maybe running windows vista?

...as my external hdd gave a similar problem after my friend used it, and then we first had to plug it back into his vista laptop, to "remove safely", and then it worked again perfectly

i also had blown my 4gb flash before. as soon as i plugged into my customer's pc (the front one). it blew it right away.

It will "fry" if the headers are on the incorrect way (includes insufficient grounding from chassis)..

'Tis very common with Mecer machines...

@ wizdumb - Original PC running XP Pro
@ dablakmark8 - I'll go for hardware, since no PC picks up the drives anymore when you plug it in to a USB port
@ identity - I suppose the only way to find out is to swop them and pop another usb stick in there :D

LOL check out connector on motherboard for front USB

should be red, white, green and black for both connectors (VCC, Data -, Data +, Ground) "Could sometimes be other colors, but should have the right text on it"
or look here for diagram: (http://www.frontx.com/cpx108_2.html)
Lost a few Flash drives like this.. Hate using my flash drives on customer's Pc's.. That's why I prefer using usb on the back of PC..

5V input to 3.3V electronics is a very bad idea. They should electrocute the techs who build these machines!!
