my friend just got a friendly email from his isp that is knows he is using torrents and have logged his downloads; they say that they will block his ip.

good luck to the other torrentees here

email snip
IS ( Internet solutions ) has informed us that you are downloading Illegal software (???) on the account ???

Please note that Illegal software will not be tolerated on the IS network.
If you could please refrain from using BitTorrent again. Reason being that (IS) has your ip address and they will block you as well as black list you.

...theres even a little log included with full details - Big Ben is watching

and if he was getting a Linux distro? Isn't it illegal of them to threaten that in the 1st place even?

i wouldn't list movies/games/applications/music as legal - lets be honest, as if everything torrented is legal :D

hehe, for sure but afaik, it's only if you seed that it becomes illegal.

Very interesting. I would just deny it completely ( BitTorrent???? What's that? ) and ask them to send details on the basis that maybe someone has hacked your mate's connection.

So IS is monitoring his downloads and notified his ISP? Hah! So much for privacy. If that's true then I'm cancelling my IS account at the end of this month.

I download torrents, I'll admit that. Usually of pirated games and software. One tiny little thing though - I BUY them afterwards!

I don't like the idea of invasion of privacy. *spits*

Big Brother is coming sooner then we all thought it seems like....(although, technically it should of happend in 1984 ?)

Guessing here - IS gets one of those DMCA emails from the USA, forwards on to this sub-ISP, who flap and send the mail parts of which were posted. If an ISP really WANTS to be a policeman, they would have to monitor ALL content on their own servers, and all the traffic. I doubt they would like the financial implications of that. They are a "safe haven" or "carrier" or whatever the American legalese is are they not?

Was this on a business uncapped account?

I can imagine they would be strict as imagine an entire office raping the uncapped accounts with torrents :p

One of these warnings gets posted a few times a year... happened the last ten years. One time its Telkom, one time it is IS. Can you show us the original e-mail with headers (and just blank out the friend's name)? Not saying its BS... but probably just the ISP forwarding a warning or trying to be administrative. Nothing has ever come of it... yet. I'd file it where I file my 419 scams. :p If IS or any ISP ever canceled an account because of this it would be their financial loss.

Why do you guys not use private trackers? I know the ratio but some aren't that strict.

Man, dont worry.

The manager wakes up one day and decides to do this to show he/she/it is a meanie.

Nothing more than a insecurity issue. Send the managers department a bottle of whiskey or something then he'll feel better about himher/itself and life goes on.

Really, they are bored for the day and have nothing better to do than send out scare tactics - tell them to sod off.

its a is uncapped express account

well i also do that; check first if ok and worth my Rands i go buy it - the days are long gone where you could *just* go out and buy something knowing its really worth your buck.

I once had sony send telskum an email, which worked its way to axxess (back when we had 30 gig accounts) and then finally to me and my friend, who naturally crapped our pants. Axxess also threatened action against us. After a few weeks we got back to it though :p Being in Africa, no-one really gives a hoot.

Got an email from my ISP as well yesterday. Key is to stick to older and/or local torrents

A mate of mine received a direct email from NBC requesting that he STOPS downloading their CONTENT... I'm guessing that your ISP got the same letter and decided to tell you to warn you.

The previous ISP I was involved with used to get about 10 of those a day to forward to clients. We deleted them, and we simply wouldnt dream of telling our high bandwidth usage clients what programs they can and can not use on the Internet.

If you get one.. turf it :P

Nothing is ganna happen:P

And yes, it is a forwarded email. Though with your details in them. Retarded Internet Sheriff sniffs your torrent, gets upset, emails it to your tier 1 provider, who pass it down the line to your local ISP.
