A more significant factor is the clever integration of discrete components into the core silicon of the PS3, dramatically reducing the component count. The new generation PS3 contains an estimated 2,820 individual parts, compared to 4,048 in the previous-generation model with a 60Gbyte hard drive.

While the previous generation PS3 was sold by Sony at a significant loss, which the company made up for via game title sales and royalties, the new version may help stanch the hardware red ink. “With its new-generation PS3, Sony has come closer to breaking even, although it probably hasn’t quite reached that mark yet,” said Andrew Rassweiler, director and principal analyst, teardown services, for iSuppli. “With iSuppli’s estimated PS3 cost at $448.73, the product retailing in the United States at around $399 and taking into account other expenses, the PS3 may be able to break even in 2009 with further hardware revisions.”

Ouch. Even @ 35% less in manufacturing costs, they'll still be losing money on hardware sales?
 
Hehehe, they'll never match the 360. Blu Ray, driving up costs since 2006!
 
This still seems that the price to consumers will be pretty much unchanged...
We still busting our banks to get a PS3 and they'll now be almost breaking even.
 
At least with the PS3 you are paying for quality and an entire home entertainment system (for example, I connect wirelessly to my pc's 500gig hdd which is full of series, and watch them all on my TV).

I have the Xbox360 as well but I find the only better thing about it is the online factor, which I dont use anyway.

The sad thing about it all, is that unless you have owned both consoles you will struggle to find a difference between the two, thus you get the cheaper one.

If they can some how get their console to be cheaper, then it will do a whole lot of good for them when it comes to sales.

well if u read the thread.... Firefox is not what it use to be.... they started about debating it against IE7 ... anyway to my point...some1 there said just cause its from MS(microsoft 4 those who ddnt know) means its worse....

Not always true.

Probably similar numbers to people who only buy the PS3 because of their fond memories of PS1 & 2. The uneducated.

I have both to and find the xbox to be a generally better experience, especially since NXE. PS3 only really used for Blueray and free games I get from videoshop.
 
It will be good news when the PS3 actually gets cheaper. The price is still way too high.

For anyone who is looking for a game console the 360 still makes more sense.

No the XBox 360 doesn't come with wireless networking. You have to fork out another R1000 for a wireless network adaptor.

look better? i used to like the PS3's look until i realised it had no design at all, it resembles a sandwich toaster, on the other hand, i love the 360's slight inward curve, its noticable but subtle.
