hi guys

i need to get my folks pc literate was thinking of this for them:

Intel Pentium Dual Core E2280 - 2.2Ghz
1GB DDR2 RAM
160GB SATA II 7200RPM HDD
Midi Tower Case
DVD Writer +/_ ( 22x) DL (8.5GB)
Onboard Sound + Lan
Keyboard + Optical Mouse

they will just be using it for word, power point, and check internet sites and read/replying to emails, running xp pro not vista.

what you think???? suggestions????

This is a decent machine. Although even a Celeron would suffice for their needs

what about this:

Intel Celeron 1.8Ghz CPU (430)
2GB DDR2 RAM
160GB SATA II 7200 RPM HDD
No SDD
Midi Tower Case
DVD Writer +/_ ( 22x) DL
Onboard Sound & VGA + Lan
Keyboard + Optical Mouse

I would go for the second one, you should be able to get a refurbished 2nd hand one for R2000.

:D just pulling your leg.. I made 3d animations with my celeron although it took about 2 weeks for 15 mins.

tyerone: If the price difference is just R300 go with your 1st choice

I have a:

Celeron 466Mhz
128 Meg Ram
Riva TNT 2
Sound Blaster 16Bit
20 Gig HD
AT Case
14 INch Monitor
Keyboard + Mouse

If you want it, would work aswell... You can have it for R2000 :P

Perhaps set them up as users not as admin and put in a decent AV and firewall, firefox with noscript and let them surf safely

Great that you want to help your parents, what OS and office where you considering?

How much do they currently know about computers?

they know how the basic work, open up word, type, ect but they need to learn about the world of the internet :D

Jabberwocky is right, if the price difference isn;t great, go with your first option as it's better long-term investment.
Else go for a Celeron.

I also bought an entry level AMD last year for around R1500, excl monitor. Machine runs like a bomb

Hey tyerone,

If the price is affordable, go with the first one and add another 1GB memory.

I recently got my mom as well as my dad-in-law "PC litterate" and web connected, just before Christmas - they were terrified initially, but after a month or so they both surf for hours, play adventure games, doing their taxes and banking online, e-mail accounts everywhere, skype, recording TV programs, video, music, etc. etc... they're both like kids again! LOL!

With new PC hardware being released/upgraded every 5 minutes, I'd go with the higher spec, as I'm sure that your folks won't stop at word and web... trust me, once they see what they can do, they'll be hooked! :D
