Busy doing diag on a system. Power supply is shot after lightening strike but no sign of damage on motherboard or CPU.

New PSU fails to bring system to life so continuing the search for survivors. RAM might be okay. Have to check CPU and RAM separately on another test system.

Just funny how surges and in this case lightening can so subtly stuff things up...

:D

Luckily this is not my equipment. So far plugging out before storms hit has been working well...

K, Since its a mod thread I'll get some response

My PC restarts by itself while Listening to music, movies..playing games and more
Summary
Flash HDD
Reinstall Xp...
Same problem still

I interfer with My PSU cable and swop it from graphic>HDD>DVD and now it restarts while detecting drive, change to normal and now it does detect the HDD then restarts
I took out ram > tried a different ram
Tried Different HDD
Took out Graphic card....
Still does not start, such detects ram and restarts

Is it the PSU?

Nopers. System is completely stuffed. Already installed the HDD which was fine on a replacement system for friend who needed the computer for business. Runs his POS server off of it.

Now I am looking for working parts from what remains. Self diagnosis in other words. Process of elimination.

k, check my previous thread , I also Self diagnosis .. The HDD works on my old PC, DVD works....

As I said Dark_agent, I think you should create or use a windows installation CD with SP2 or later on it...

Okay, have you updated the BIOS with the latest version?

DAmn, I can't, because it does not ON anymore...
When I ON my PC it restarts after it does the ram test and sometime while detecting Drive...:(

Have you tracked CPU and system temperature?

Could it be running hot?

Temp was normal.. Clean it 3 weeks ago and last 42 degrees which is my PC norm Temp..

Could be busted HDD... you need to pop in a different HDD... Check if it works... Even boot it without HDD and see what it does...

Am currently using my HDD on my Old PC... Tried vice versa..

@ Antowan - fun times to be had, for sure... trying the process of elimination to find the culprit.

Most likely the motherboard got a bit of a kick in the nadgers, and is suitable for throwing away.

Lightning is a funny thing, for sure.

One client of mine (a long time ago) got hit by lightning via modem/telephone line, replaced modem, added external serial ports as only the onboard serial ports was stuffed, rest of the mobo was 100%. No other problems.

Well I am done with diag. CPU, RAM and DVD writer are all fine. Mobo is fried and it seems like lightning ran across serial ports into PCI serial add-on cards and never reached the CPU, RAM etc.

The serial expansion cards are both fried too. Clearly as evidenced by burn marks hehehehehehe. :D The burn marks are very slight and you really have to stare to see it...
