Hi all

Will the GIGABYTE ODIN 585W power supply good enough for the GTX 285?
How does one tell?

thanks

The Odin series are powerful...the GTX itself won't show more than 150w since its gone "green" so it shouldnt be a problem

Just check it the reviews and power consumption of the GTX, then find your other components and do a little maths...whats the rest of your specs?

other specs

Q9550
One sata drive
One dvdR
2 12cm fans
The GTX 285

Should be fine... TomsHardware had a review on power consumption a while back and they could run a beast of a machine from a 350W... The figures are almost all of the time over compensating... If it isnt enough, get one later rather than wasting money on one before hand.

My mate running is the exact same specs you have with a HIS Ice Q4 Turbo 4870 on the same psu... no issues.
Did you buy your rig at PCZone?

The Q9550 has a max TDP of 95w (lets make it 150), GTX probably 150w (just make it 200w)

Sata HDD + DVD RW + Mobo + 2x 12 cm fan = 200w (ok probably only like 40w or so)

= 550w max

Ur Odin puts out continuous watt of 585w

You definitely have nothing to worry about

You're thinking of the Odin Gts. Did you ever wonder why the Odin GT 550watt is more than double the price of the 585watt?

I'd wager it's 500 continuous. My buddy bought a "460" watt gigabyte psu, turned out it was 390 continuous.

You get what you pay for with psus. I'd say get the 650watt coolermaster extreme. That way you'll have plenty of headroom.

i was also interested in the odin GT series.

luckily I didn't buy it...... do what Qwikslver says, stay away from gigabyte PSU's...they are too new to the market....

Oh yes...u're right.

Though the Superb are the budget series of gigabyte, which states the max output.

I see the "ODIN" only came out lately, even got 370watts...no info found on google if its max output or continuous.

Though 500w continuous is enough for his rig...

Well I got the 800watt odin and I read quite a few reviews about them before I bought it and I could not find any reviews that had something really bad to say about them. And am still suffering to find any really big prob with it.

Am not sure if a 585watt psu is enough for a 285.
But what i can tell you is that the odin will not disappoint you in anyway if you do decide to get one.

Gigabyte partner with ATI, and make 4870X2's.

Gigabyte make Odin PSU's

Gigabyte Odin's not on ATI's 4870X2 PSU Compatability-test page.

I know you don't want an ATI 4870X2, but that's saying something.....

..from all the stuff I've read, I for one, think your PSU is sufficient since the rest of your system is pretty lean.

gtx285 183W

My 4870 512mb doesn't even mildy test my Corsair HX520 at round 150W -160W

why would one want a top of the range 3D card, and buy an el' cheapo PSU to feed it juice?

that's like buying a Ferrari, and putting 13" wheels on it.

Lol I'm sure u wrote the same thing in a few other posts...

Been meaning to ask, did an El cheapo take out ur rig before?

Though you are right...better safe than sorry
