Hi
I have 2 firms that share a building and the internet connection. They use a Telkom Mega 100wr Router. The problem is that now they can see each others computers and files. I have put them on seperate workgroups so it looks like they cant see each other but need to make it that their is no way they can see each other.

I am new to forums so if this has been dealt with please advise.
Also where can I get some general tips on use of forums

Thank you

VLAN's, if the MEGA supports it.

You can get some more info on the forum here

Hi Snormossel thanks for your help it is helping but I am struck again
I downloaded the manual for the Mega 100WR it mentions VLAN’s but I am not sure what it means
“The Egress Layer 2 page (Figure 4-38) allows you to map the CoS of an outgoing packet to user
priority bits, which is honoured by the VLAN network. Again, this feature is only configurable
on the WAN interfaces as VLAN is only supported on the WAN side on this version of the
router.”
What do they mean with WAN side? Will a firmware update help me get more functions?
I have a Mega 105WR at home under the LAN configuration tab it’s got LAN groups you can configure
The first one LAN1 got USB WLAN and Ethernet1 which you can configure, on LAN 2,3,4,5 it looks like you can only add more SSID
Is this something I will be able to use at the client?
I am a bit lost when it comes to routers

You could also use Subnetting. Put the router on 1 IP range, your one network on another and the last network on a 3rd range. Your 2 networks will only be able to see themselves and the router in theory

Might be a bit of an expensive exersise but why not install a perimeter firewall that permits outgoing connections from both networks but declines the IP range of each network from accessing each other? There are a couple of Open Source Firewalls you could use for this.

Just a thought :)

why don't you start from the other end
split up the two networks physically
purchase 2 more routers with wan ports , each network has connects to one router(which does the pppoe), both routers wan connections then plug into the telkom router in bridge mode and no more problems.

elegant simple and correct

I probably should have mentioned that the one LAN runs of its own Netgear router.
They have a cable then running from the Netgear router to the Telkom ADSL router. The other LAN then has a Dlink switch with all its cables and 1 cable into the Telkom ADSL router.

I need to have a look if the Netgear can do the VLAN thing Snormossel suggested my other option is to do what bboy suggested with the extra router. Can somebody please explain to me what the WAN port is on the router? Is it a dedicated port? My Mega 105wr only got 4 * Ethernet ports and then the telephone [ort so I am lost as to what a WAN port is.

the WAN port on a router is a dedicated port on a router that it expect to be connected to an ADSL modem/bridge mode router. Your private network does not extend over the WAN port. Chances are your negear probably has a wan port on it, if its ADSL capable.

Routers like Linksys WRT54G, the green line is the WAN port

thats the setup you want, the adsl telkom router will be running in bridge mode, the linksys on the blue network will have the pppoe account setup and running on it, and the linksys on the orange network will have its own pppoe account running on it.

the orange and blue networks cannot see each other. You can run the same pppoe account on both routers or different ones and if so each company could run up their own bandwidth bill
