Yesterday it was announced that the ANC or Govt (I forget which one and YES, there is a difference between the two :)) will hold a press conference of 'national importance'.

Anyone knows whether this is still to happen?

Thanks

It's not of national importance.

Talk radio 702 declined them airtime once they heard what it was about. And said they refuse to give them airtime as it's not of national importance. I think there is a link on News24 about it.

Just more Political rallying I guess.

Thanks Pitbull, found it. Ridiculous how the twits want to use and abuse the media. You cannot have a high drama press conference everytime someone defects !!

Johannesburg - Talk Radio 702 declined to host the venue for an announcement by ANC policy head Jeff Radebe on Thursday as it was not of "national importance" as originally believed.

Radebe was billed to make an announcement of "national importance" at the station's Sandton office at around 10:00.

The station's Katy Katapodis said that when they initially discussed Radebe's announcement, they understood that it was a matter of national interest.

They had since been fully briefed and decided it was not of national interest and that it would not be held on their premises.

Radebe apparently told journalists that Cope's head of elections, Mlungisi Hlongwane, had defected back to the ANC.

The briefing would now be held at noon at the party's Luthuli House headquarters in Johannesburg.

hehe

I was also looking for it now but couldn't find it. I know I read it this morning :o

Thanx for the link.

Red-faced after being misled by the ANC on an alleged "matter of national importance", Talk Radio 702 kicked senior ANC spokespeople out of its Sandton building, forcing the politicians to hold their press conference in the car park.

Group Editor Katy Katopodis said that "regrettably" the conference had been cancelled.

The decision had been taken after ANC heavyweights Jeff Radebe and Jess Duarte finally informed the station - after high secrecy and a number of delays - that the news was about the defection from COPE back to the ANC of Mlungisi Hlongwane, who is COPE's head of elections.

If the conference had been allowed to go ahead, said Katopodis, "we would simply have been used by the ANC".

She said Hlongwane's defection to the ANC was not a major national interest.

She added that, if the Primedia group had allowed the press conference to take place its credibility would have been at stake.

Direko asked if she felt they had been set up and Katopodis replied: she said: "I would like to believe that we were not set up. They may have a genuine reason."

COPE deputy president Mbhazima Shilowa said Hlongwane had not notified the party of his intention to defect and that this was news to them on Thursday morning.

Apparently the ANC thinks they are the government. Party matters are not of "national importance" you twits.

I don't know about this. Did they not give Lekota a venue to air his moaning about ANC? That famous "divorce" one.

LOL!

The ANC ought to be red-faced.

702 were used by Terror to broadcast live the serving of divorce papers which proved to be the launch pad for COPE :D

Mlungisi Hlongwane was one of the very first defectors and the fact that he was COPE's head of election deserves the voters' attention

Jeff Radebe was pissed off about the cancellation, so much that he reversed into John Robbie's car.

Really???

That was entrirely different - it was about the forming of a new (major) political party, not a simple defection by someone who cannot make up his mind.

That might have something to do with ANC members' general lack of sight - hindsight and foresight...

But lets be honest.

The way that the ANC and COPE failed at the elections of which the results where released yesterday. I doubt the Cope even wants him TBH. The ANC did a little better without him. Now he can go drag them down :D

The DA killed the WC :D

About time SA see that actions speak louder than Political propaganda.

That was a big news story, so I do understand 702 Talk Radio wanting to exclusively cover it. This struggle between COPE and the ANC is not.

Who needs hindsight when you got these gizmos in them big cars that warn you that you are about to reverse into an obstacle :D

THe choice of John RObbie's car is also some uncanny accuracy:D

The way I remember it, Lekota issued a bunch of ultimatums to the ANC at that session, and said if not satisfied, they will form a party. So as you said in response to Jungleboy, newsworthy yes, but they gave him a platform.

Now, IMO, it shows a biased attitude by the management of 702. They gave COPE the platform, but when a senior official, one who is running their election campaign no less, is going to defect to the ANC, they scrap everything.

Does that sound fair to you? Forget for a moment the people involved and just focus on whether its fair or not.

And he still hit John Robbie's car? His on-board computer can't be very revolutionary (pun intended)...
