R1 billion Joburg Broadband Project to start soon

I think this is great news - More competion for Telkom is always good.

But will this be open to the public or ONLY BUSSINESS LIKE IN Durban?

Great, there goes R1 billion of our rates money on a limp wristed project that will inevitable be bought out by one of the incumbents.

I see a fibre glut in our near future (+-2-3 yrs). Not a bad thing, but realise that it's not private money.

Blech. So far the durban municipality has rolled out a network. What do they do then? they resell to the most expensive isp the world has ever known... mweb. So if I want to take advantage of the municipal network as its "cheaper" I need to go through mweb and pay their 100% odd markup.

nee dankie baie.

If they want to do it properly, then make it available directly without third party isps coming along to raise the prices significantly.

Given that most providers are unwilling to invest in fibre to the consumer, I think this is positive development. Otherwise we are going to be stuck with wireless for a very long time to come.

I had the idiots from Mweb come and see me about the Durban Metro Network. And it turned out to look very good on paper. R1000 per 512Kbps per site. Internet break out seperate.

Turns out, that if you want to link up two premesis, you have to take a VPN Internet option. I can get a diginet line point to point for basically the same price in the end, and the diginet line doesn't have hidden costs.

The people at Mweb can't understand why a client would want to have a point to point connection? Surely they could just use the internet??? Stupid rabbits... tricks are for kids...

This idea has FAILed here in Durban, and it will probably FAIL in Johannesburg.

Secondly, Ethernet of Power Line does not work for large scale networks... everyone who has tried has burnt their fingers, pun intended. You can't pass the RF Harmonics through a transformer, so it means installing expensive equipment at every single sub box in Jozi.

Durban's attempt at Ethernet of Power Line was to encase the 3 phase power cable around a fibre core... sorry, but this is not Ethernet of Power Line. This is just a fibre cable using the strength of copper cable so that it can be suspended between pylons.

Should Jozi not outsource the ENTIRE thing (plan, install and run) lock, stock & barrel to someone like Ericsson?
Complete with anti-corruption, anti-interference ... even anti-ruling-party-influence clauses to avoid yet another rate-hike on presently-disadvantaged and bandwidth-starved Jozi dwellers.

Any man with the surname Schofield should be able to pull this off, hes probably got the entire cable grid tattooed to his chest.

I believe Mweb is not your only option to purchase bandwidth from this network.
Any VANS can resell the bandwith.

schurtek - it's up to the reseller if they want to sell you a "VPN Internet option" or not.
