My friend voted today, but they had not registered. They were there with their dad and the person asked them why they are not voting, they said because they hadn't registered and then the person said they could register there and then they did and voted...

I have never heard of this???
 
It was a concession. It's pretty much part of the vote wherever you want thing. The people that went to the wrong polling stations also had to fill in the form. Caused chaos at several polling stations though.
 
You can register at the voting station. They cannot say you can't it's your constitutional right. So yes it is allowed.
 
As far as I know, yes she can. She just shows up and tells them she isn't registered to vote at whatever polling station shes at. She'll fill in the form and she'll be able to vote.
 
So what stops someone going to several polling stations and repeating the process? Is there a mark/dye used?
 
As far as i know even after the cut off date you were still allowed to go the the IEC head office and register to vote.

They scan your ID and mark you off the list as well as mark your finger so the chances of you getting away with this is highly unlikely

Yeah, no more likely than if you were already registered and tried to vote twice.
 
Nope technically it wasn't. The cut off date just implied it was the last time the IEC would come to your area. If you wanted to register you'd have to do your bit and go to them.
 
Guys tell your friends who haven't registered. such cool news why didn't they tell people about this!?

Yeah, I think this has always been the case. You can register any time you want, right up to the elections. You just have to go to your municipality to do it once the IEC people have left. I don't think many people know this though.
 
Hey mods please make an announcement on the forum informing people of this as I don't think a lot of people know.
 
It seems most people don't know this, you are right hj2k.

It is your constitutional right to vote ladies and gents, so nobody can deny you this right.

My other half didn't have the ID-book sticker from registration day, so we called around and found out we had to go to the IEC offices in CBD Cape Town. So we did - it was a five-minute process after arriving. Also thought the local municipality could do it, but it seems it's restricted to this list. At least that's what we were told :p
