Hi

Probably simple...but if I don't ask I won't know :)

I have a Netgear 834 router serving a small office with main "account" as always on PPPOE connection entered on the router.

Now at night I want to use another account [local only] to download with grabit...why waste telkom line rental ;)

Preferably I want to just initiate a PPPOE connection from the PC with grabit loaded...
Will this then use the new connection or the "always" on connection on the router? or is there a better way to do this via route sentry maybe?

Thanks
George

If your router supports it then no - it wont have any impact on the account the router uses.

You just have to make sure that the router is in "half bridge mode".

the router has one of the accounts as the default, but the PC has a PPPoE connection with the night time account set up. The PC then dials up and "tunnels" through the router ignoring the router's connection.

FFFF just as I thought I am progressing, I find out that the Netgear 834 does not "officially" support bridging

Now it's back to marconi, yeah! or try the "modem" mode in the hidden pages!

Downside to modem mode anyone? or other solution? other router alternative that does have all the bells and flashing lights?

Thanks
George

get another router?

there is no alternative for what you are wanting to do.... unless you go with Full Bridge mode and then have a PPPoE connection on the computer for both connections. Full Bridge mode is easy.... just don't put any settings into the router.

but then how would the other users on the network connect during the day?

I was just thinking about doing this myself as well but was not quite sure where to start with it either.

On their computers you would specify the daytime connection as the default, and set it to dial automatically, so anytime they need a connection it "dials" up.

Then on your computer, you don't specify a default connection, you only connect to each one as needed (you can put two shortcuts on your desktop).

To create a PPPoE connection....

Can't go full bridge unfotunately

...and the new router's name is :) ? seeing that you made the suggestion ;)

FYI - I'll post my solution as I wish more people would do the same :p

I got a nice and cheap planet ADE 4400 v3 broadband router...
Although the Billion mentioned would have been a better choice, I was limited by time to get a replacement for the netgear...

It's got "half bridge" mode, albeit it a bit hidden...
Negatives:
iffy menu structure - open to opinion
Positive:
Nice diags on ADSL connection
It works

Now I run the telkom "primary" as always on PPPOE connection on the router and another ISP as a "dial up" PPPOE... works like a charm for news server downloads :)

Cool beans... just make sure that when you leave at night, you set the night time connection to "re-dial when connection is dropped" and turn it off in the morning. I know it is a pain. but if your connection does drop, the news downloader will happily suck up all your international cap! :p

Not that it has ever happened to me :D

You just raised a red flag there...I actually did not set that, oops! I'll check where to set it and if I'm stuck you'll be the first to know :D

Thanks

OK, looked at the setup of the PPPOE "dialup" connection...

The default is to re-dial if connection is dropped, but only to try 3 times...
So I guess it would then be wise to set the redial number as high as possible - depending how long you plan to leave you pc alone and make up time by changin g the redial interval...
This seems like a crude hack, so I'm all ears for a safer/better solution...

idle time before handing up should be set to "never"
below that "redial if line is dropped" should be checked.
and the connection should be set to the "default connection"

also check "connection settings" under Internet options in Control Panel.

Make sure it is the default there and set to "always dial my default connection" ... during the daytime you can change that to "never dial a connection"
