IS disconnecting sessions on hourly basis

I have been using an IS ADSL account for the past year or so and got used to the fact that the session only disconnects about once or twice a month.

Since the middle of last month however, IS have been disconnecting the sessions on an hourly basis. I just confirmed it via their usage tracker:

Login time Logout time Session Length (hh:mm:ss)
2009/07/03 21:55 2009/07/03 22:55 00:59:26
2009/07/03 22:55 2009/07/03 23:51 00:56:15
2009/07/03 23:51 2009/07/04 00:48 00:57:24

There is absolutely nothing wrong with my line, because when I use a SAIX account this does not happen.

Any reason for them doing this?

I had that quite a while back, I can't remember which ISP I was with but I think it might have been Openweb at the time.

My OpenWeb Uncapped with IS is working fine. Are you sure it is not your line synch dropping?

Yes, also OpenWeb.

Garyvdh, I stated in my message that this does not happen on a SAIX account, so it is not my line. It is solid as a rock.

"Connected (2d 16h 57m 25s) - WebAfrica Local"

So WebAfrica local only IS is not disconnecting.

Interesting. Maybe it's an attempt to avoid having people run over their international limit? Hourly disconnects are way over the top though.

Then why isn't it happening to me? I've done hundreds of Gigs this month already. Surely they would want to cut me back, if that was their reasoning?

Because you're on uncapped. I was using a (3GB + 27GB) IS account --- generally I would get a bit more than 3GB international; now, with hourly disconnects, I get almost exactly 3GB int. before being bumped down to local only access. Getting exactly what I paid for is OK, but the disconnects foul up downloads (bad if you're downloading from a server without resume support).

well, now that you mention it... I am getting a lot of corrupted downloads... but no disconnects.

have a looksee at your router log to make sure you're not being disconnected, on the sly, (though I would believe that you're not, being on uncapped).

OT: Are you on genuine uncapped or one of those rolling-limit jobs? Am seriously considering that option now.

It's throttled during business hours to 256K which is good enough for Web Browsing... but from 8 pm to 8 am I can get up to 18 Gigs. Over Weekends I get 80 Gigs. On my 4 mbps ADSL is runs at 420 KB/s all the time.

me and my neighbour both got dropped on I.S... it wasn't a sync issue because both our saix accounts in bridge mode were running 100% at that instant...

openweb?

They are definitely disconnecting your router on an hourly basis. This is on a semi-unshaped fibre IS account through OpenWeb.

Here is the log for yesterday:

Yes! I think you're right. Isn't that one of the new (quite old now) rules? Link someone....

memory is a little rusty, but wasnt that one of the hotly debated topics with Telkom's 24hr resets? i mean hourly is looking for k@k!

If I remember correctly that reset thing is why we moved away from Openweb. Come to think of it they're the only ISP we've had any trouble with, all the other times we've changed (Webafrica, Axxesss) was for better prices.

Keoma always seemed decent and sincere when/if he got back to you, but lately Openweb is starting to sound like a bad word, just look around here as an example. If he wasn't nice I wouldn't say I hope he can pull it together before it's to late.

mmm as far as I know Communications Act clearly states that no ISP are allowed to priodicly disconnect users

It seems to have stopped (at least for me).

Still going on this side. Here is my log for the 9th of July:

I would suggest getting an account with someone else if you don't already, like a 1GB from the shop maybe and see how that works, try get one on the same backbone as the one giving problems IS/SAIX. If it's fine with an account from another ISP and you have this problem for more than a few days and tell you current ISP why you're moving over to the other ISP.

Maybe they'll take it seriously if people actually changed their ISP when one gives problems.

Still doing it today.

Anyone else also have this account with OpenWeb who can confirm they are also getting these hourly resets?

Which account is it again?

My Uncapped Express with OpenWeb doesn't disconnect.

I'll try and get the guys at OpenWeb on it for you.
