Telkom defends itself at ICASA hearings

this is unfair they have all the answers.can we everstop telkom .it looks like a loosing battle to me.i think a poll must be implemented for the whole nation that has telkom internet.only the masses will make a change.there must be a way
 
They complain that it is only them that are being targeted and not WBS, Sentech etc.

Where do you think, telkom, that those other providers get their bandwidth from?
 
They say that the overwhelming majority of users don't hit there cap, therefore they're okay with it? That's flawed... I don't hit my cap because I am careful - if there was no cap you can be sure that people wouldn't download less than 3 GB - although that's exactly Telkom's reasoning. :(
 
I find it absurd that Telkom compares their pricing to the wireless/cellphone service providers. It is a well known fact that wireless is almost always more expensive than ADSL when providing broadband due to the nature of wireless technology and wireless bandwidth scarcity. The fair comparison is with other ADSL services in the 1st and 3rd world.

This is a fair comparison because the equipment used (DSLAMs etc) are more or less the same price in USD, whether the ADSL service provider is located in a 3rd world or 1st world country. The only difference from country to country could be labour costs and efficiency. 3rd World labour costs should be lower and efficiency probably also lower. The factors will probably cancel each other out.

The end result is that ADSL line rental prices (not ISP costs) should be comparable between all countries. Telkom has absolutely no leg to stand on wrt their ADSL line rental and I hope the members presenting at the hearings will expose their pricing argument for the sham it is.
 
The reason why other competitors have to charge so much is because telkom is the only provider of international bandwidth and THEY have to buy from TELKOM. I sure hope the dudes at ICASA isn't a bunch of dumbasses and can see through the wool they're trying to pull over their eyes

Correct me if I'm wrong but the 3G company Telkom is referring to is Vodacom? Despite the fact that consumers are always willing to pay a premium for mobility do you think Telkom forces their subsidiary Vodacom to have higher prices just so they can make the argument that they're not the most expensive?

I cant fathom how they were ever allowed to even become an ISP. Talk about an unfair market advantage - the ability to dictate a competitors price!
 
Well there will be analysis of all Telkom's comments the next while on hellkom, dispelling the myths that Telkom is in fact always correct and we are always wrong.

Fact is they are desparately clinging onto any scrap of information to get themselves out of a *** situation they got themselves into by shafting us royally in the first place. It's time for the consumers to get some good news and I sincerely hope it will happen.. or who knows what else may happen.
 
Saying ADSL is cheaper than 3G is like saying that a BMW is cheaper than a Helicopter. They are both expensive, they both give you the same thing (transport), but the helicopter is more mobile and costs much more. Ultimately, Telkom controls the fuel (bandwidth), so helicopters must buy much more expensive fuel from Telkom.

yes other countries are applying caps and shapes but they also provide uncapped/UNSHAPPED aswell giving you have a choice.
telkom dont give you a choice.
yes there are uncapped accounts poping up at the moment but they are soo shapped that you would have more luck squezzing an elephant through a straw :p

Hi noone,

My personal impression from those at ICASA that I have dealt with is that they are not a bunch of dumbasses - but they are rather powerless and in an incredibly difficult political position.

An email from a senior ICASA manager this week said the following: "It really makes me happy to know that there are people out there who see the other side of Telkom." The email went on to talk about how Telkom are, and I quote, "trying to manipulate" a particular situation.

But of course, that is only from one ICASA person. It gives me hope at least!

The struggle continies ... why can't they just see that they are fighting a loosing battle? I mean one of these days they are going to fall - very hard - why can't they just make it a soft landing for themselfs?
 
No actually because I really think beneath all their retardism, they truely believe they are cheap and effective.

comparing costs of ADSL to 3G :D

ADSL in SA is about 400% overpriced ,but currently 3G & EDGE is around 30 % cheaper when compared to similar European offerings.

ADSL is a matured technology based on PSTN copper wires ,infrastructure.

If Telkom wishs to compare ADSL to 3G Wireless service providers ,
ADSL will have to be priced 30 % cheaper than European counter-parts.

Which means ADSL will have to cost consumer less than R150 per month !
 
Trust me they are doing this.

The have think tanks working over time at Telkom at the moment,

Thats why in the future would will see the 8mb adsl come out and thats within a year with higher caps, video on demand etc.

SABC has been looking at taking mnet market and this would be one way.
