With Telkom broadband, what happens when you reach your monthly usage cap? Do you have to pay excess usage charges OR is your speed lowered to something like 64Kbps?

Also, howcome on their website it doesn't list how much data you get per month with each plan?:

Also, does Telkom have dial-up internet and how fast is it and how much data can you use per month?

Generally, when you are capped, you get cut off. Some ISPs (see below) offer local cap AFTER you finish your initial blended cap (any international and local usage counts to your blended). You can use this local cap to access any content hosted in SA.

Adsl has two components, the line and the usage. That page shows the cost for a line then you have to pay for data. Basically, you buy a line and then you buy your cap. You generally get the line from Telkom but you can get the cap from any ISP. Afrihost is probably the cheapest for international bandwith: Afrihost but it does not come with any local bandwidth. Telkom's data prices can be found here. Scroll down to see the per GB costs. Also take a look at DoBroadband for package offerings.

Telkom does offer dial up. The speed is 56kb/s or 7KB/s. You don't pay for data transferred, you pay for the phone call. For example, if you're connected for 8 hours, you pay for an 8 hour phone call.

I hope this is kinda coherent. I'm sorta sleep-deprived right now.
Good luck and welcome to MyBB!:)

EDIT: DoBroadband's 'package offerings' combine the cost of the line with the cost of cap. So you pay on price for both services. Just wanted to make that a little clearer

Thanks, guys. I hope to become a permanent (useful) fixture around here!

so if you use your broadband cap up, can you TOPUP to buy more data OR do you have to wait until your next billing date?

regarding dial-up, how much would a 8 hour phone call cost?

and would you say most people in south africa use broadband or dialup?

Dial-up's dying out with ADSL becoming relatively affordable.
As for whether you can top up your cap, indeed you can. Prepaid bandwidth, which doesn't expire, which I prefer, goes for around R70/gb.
Phone call costs would depend on whether you're phoning peak or off-peak. Peak time phone calls will set you back quite a bit.

You can topup using any ISP. We have a Telkom Do Closer 3 package which includes 5GB per month data on a 4Mbps line. When the 5GB is finished (capped) I simply switch over to my Axxess account where I have buy prepaid data at R69/GB. This prepaid doesn't expire, so whatever I don't use rolls over to next month to be used when I get capped again.

If you know you'll be using considerably more than your Telkom cap every month I'd suggest you get an additional account from Afrihost - they charge R29/GB (but this doesn't roll over).
