Gas Generators
HSG Distributors are the sole agents for 'Green Power Gas Generators' in South Africa. These units run on both LP Gas and Natural Gas. All units are tested and approved for use in South Africa. http://www.highspeedgas.co.za/pages/generators.htm

The Champion LP Gas generator is perfect for small backup power requirements and can run up to 22 hours on a 18l gas tank. Most of us have got LP gas around the house for gas braai’s or skottel braais. This runs without any petrol or diesel and consumes only LP gas. http://igenerator.co.za/uncategorized/champion-lp-gas-generator/

Richard Kolodziej, President of the IANGV (International Association of Natural Gas Vehicles), revealed just how confident he is in the future of these cars. “We have never had so much faith in the market,” he has said, believing that all the conditions are right to see a complete turn-around in the car market in two years.

How Many BTUs in a Cubic Foot of Natural Gas?

When you get your monthly natural gas bill, have you ever looked at it and wondered how much energy you're getting for all that money you pay? Gas is measured in cubic feet, but the measurement for the energy in that gas is measured in BTUs or British Thermal Units. Here is how to find out how many BTUs are in a cubic foot of natural gas.

Natural Gas
Natural gas is odorless and colorless, but it's full of energy. It is composed of mostly methane, but it can also contain ethane, propane, butane and pentane. The gas that is used in most homes is almost pure methane. The energy in natural gas is released when the gas is burned. We use that energy to heat our homes, generate electricity and cook our food.

Gas fridges/freezers can work with biogas methane, if they work with natural gas, which is just methane. Some fridge technicians have not heard of it being done. Others say it's simply a flame needed, so biogas will work. I quoted gas flame temperatures above. They are very similar.

One needs to simply use the right parts. Below is a simple explanation of the parts that you need to consider.

How can you tell if the unit does need conversion? Easy. Conversion involves three things: the orifice (jet), the turbulator, and an adjustment (maybe). The first thing you do is locate and remove the burner assembly from the refrigerator. Next, find the jet (that’s the orifice in gas lingo), unscrew it, and extract the turbulator. Does it have one groove or two grooves? One groove is used with LP (liquified propane) and two grooves are used with natural gas (city gas line). So, if you’re converting to propane, and you’ve got a two-groove turbulator, you need a one-groove turbulator.

Since propane is a higher-density fuel (more BTUs per cubic foot) than natural gas, it takes less propane to do the same job. Hence, the burner orifice (jet) must be replaced with one with a smaller diameter (hole). Don’t jump to conclusions; even if the correct turbulator is installed, this doesn’t mean that the orifice is of the correct size. And vice versa. Check it. It could be expensive (in gas and money) to assume that both were changed at the same time.

Both the turbulator and orifices for the burner assemblies of all makes and models of Servel refrigerators are still available. Remarkably, the cost of both parts seldom exceeds $5-8. Obtain them from, or through, your local LP gas office. http://www.backwoodshome.com/articles/hackleman56.html

Creating usable gas from human and animal waste together with household bio matter is to me a very important issue that needs to be explored by the individual. Thanks for the linkies.

Pleasure. Updated the OP with great DIY info. :)

I may as well mention, that the NPO ISP has made agreements with a major supplier, for what is considered the world's best wind generators, Airbreeze. We will also offer thin film solar panels.

However, the production of the SA invented thin film solar panels, which will be manufactured in Paarl, has been delayed for about 2 years, whilst they finalise things in Germany. We will source another supplier until then.

We will sell at a very slight mark up only, to ensure the demand created, in the solar panel and wind turbine industry, over the next few years, does not create high prices.

I'm damned interested in this biogas thing... might be able to initiate a project or two with my NGO.

I'm also very interested in it....

THe one big failing so far for Gas appliances (other than a stove really) is their astethics... They're not really up to scratch in comparison...

Yeah but if I can find a use for household waste to generate clean and free energy then I can forego the looks TBH.

But anyway, I'm thinking of implementing a system like this in one of our donor schools where they are currently using pit latrines. A school generates a lot of poo, which could be used to generate electricity.

Oh yeah, definitely... but in terms of things like Fridges and ovens etc.... astethics are vaguely important.. (I'm a materialistic whore.. :P )

Do let me know how that goes...

I've got contacts in a few rural schools in KZN that might be able to benefit from something like this as well.

Yes, there is a wide open market for all of the devices and related appliances.

Related services also. A lot of people can be employed by startups now. Eksdom shot itself in the foot, when it announced it's pricing. :D http://farm1.static.flickr.com/29/103394434_1b1e94c66c.jpg

ToxicBunny, did you look at the links in the quoted piece of the OP? There are some beautiful gas appliances out there. Ask around in your area also. The gas market is about to blossom...

Unless the gas prices increase to maintain the status QUO.

I'm going to get the missus a gas hob as soon as the new kitchen is in!

And a SWH for the house - I'm weaning us of the Eksdom teat over the next 3 years!

Before you buy gas appliances, go out and physically price a 25kg bottle of gas.
And remember, you have to keep 2 on hand to swap over in the middle of cooking.

yea, but you dont have to buy both at once, and the "reserve" could be a small little 6lt jobbie. Just enough to tie you over for a day or 10.

a 19.5KG bottle lasts 18 months on our stove ( cooks meals for 3 adults every day )

thats exactly what I do.....love my gas stove.......screw eskum!:D

pity I don't sheet enough to create my own bio gas:D

hey my neighbour runs a creche....maybe????
