Hi

Recently cabled my bussiness i have 31 points around the office and 3 wireless access points just incase i need wireless around the place
all linked to 1 ADSL line 4Mb

what can i implement to manage the network pages visited, bandwidth used
etc etc something opensource pref

Thanks guys

Smoothwall to filter pages visited. It's nowhere near as good as Websense but you want something for free it's generally not gonna be as good as it's priced counter-part.

Netlimiter would probably be best for shaping purposes but you'll have to pay to use that. Not sure if there is a free equivalent.

EDIT

Sorry should have asked this from the get-go what does the routing in your office? A normal router or is it going via a computer? If it's the latter and you're familiar with Linux/Unix IPCop is amazing and will do what you need it to.

well running through a netgear router

mmmm you guys got some good ideas like the smoothwall one seen it before
but really wanted like a GUI interface nothing to technical as im not good when it comes to security in a network however i suppose we all need to learn sometime hey

You could use pfsense between the network and your ADSL connection. Read the feature list at the link.

I think it will do pretty much everything you want, plus load balancing if you decide to add another DSL link.

Linux Router/Firewall/Proxy/Cache/IMAP box to take care of all your needs.

I've got fewer points (maybe a dozen or so PCs), and I use a Routerboard RB433AH to split local and international (on the same account;)), monitor traffic, limit speeds, cache DNS, handle DHCP and so on. I also thought that it would be overly complex, but as it turns out, I find it easier to use than the pfSense box I had previously. As a perk, the hardware is the cheapest solution you'll find.

You can run Smoothwall or pfSense on an obsolete PC, but within limits: as soon as you start adding traffic monitoring, rate limiting and so on, you really need a modern PC.

If you decide to go the Mikrotik route, ask here, and I'll post my setup. It's not perfect but it works, maybe a few experts can help optimise it.

Wow

yeah many options to go for hey... Think i might start with smoothwall

pity its so technical to get these things working hey

Flip i hate Websence, there is no way around it.....

Linux box with smoothwall and squid. Use squid guard to filter out sites; it's a text-file interface but you can use webmin with the squid guard module to configure it with a GUI.
