Make sure all openings are sealed and tape the cover of the weather proof box as extra protection .
All cables can be routed through conduit piping .
Next mount onto suitable pole so that it clears roof and has LOS to towers.

There are quite a few articles on the 'net for homemade hacks for PoE with power injector / power splitter (eg PoE hack) to use only CAT5 cable, but I think it will be wise to insert a bridge rectifier at the splitter end to ensure correct polarity.
BTW, would be nice if the UTD has built-in PoE.

By PoE do you mean Power over Ethernet? If so, I'm sure a good lightning strike would constitute Power over Ethernet :D

Well, that would remove all iBurst problems for the user... :)
Yeah, there's soo much lightning in my area that I daren't try sticking my UTD up a pole - often get damn close lightning strikes - one of the reasons I originally opted for a wireless connection instead of ADSL...

Same here, telephone gets knocked out regularly, on the power side I have a good UPS

Lightning ?

Lightning? The way i figured it , if it gets struck then someone would be doing me a favour and telling me to go with another solution. Then again it would probably be like a cockroach in an atomic blast, it would survive and still get on your nerves... :D

ethernet is highly susceptible to lightning.... if you want to destroy everything, not just your UTD, put your UTD up the pole and wait for the summer storms. Sadly, I account this from experience

Guru, where did you get that box you mounted the UTD in? Did you seal the pipe coming from the top of the box with anything?

Thanks

hahah thats awsome, what about damage with rain and is that pipe pvc or metal?

Apart from lightning, the other thing that concerns me is overheating, although I noticed in some JawugKit pics that the Linksys also gets sealed in what looks like the exact same type of box......what about the hot SA sun & heat from the units themselves...?

Speaking of lighting, how susceptible are the base stations to it. The reason I ask is because we've had a few thunderstorms this year in Cape Town and this morning out of the blue we had lighting strike our building (I think it did - it was blooming loud!) which has an iburst base station on it. I was a bit worried about it but it still works :)

The top of the pipe is sealed with a rubber ferrule (thing that usually goes on the bottom of chair legs) and a bit of silicone sealer . At the bottom where the cables come out there is another opening which has a seal/filter, the unit is able to "breathe" through this and thus no sucking in of moisture due to expansion/contraction. The heat generated is very small when compared to a cell phone for instance. The box is available from Communica in braamfontein and the total cost was under R100-00 .As far as lightening, i have big trees on my property and have had two of them hit at some time, there would be more chance of the UTD getting damaged through a ground strike / surge through the electrical mains earth. Back to the heat issue, as long as the box is not too small then the heat will be absorbed through the side walls which will act as an aircooled heat sink. Pipe is conduit. *NB This is my 0.1 version.

Ta thanks Guru, trying to do something like you did, execept with a Linksys router, like the Jawug kit, just with stock antennas

Just another lightning warning. I had a laptop connected to my main pc via cat5 which for a short length ran next to my telkom isdn line. A mother of a storm came along so i disconnected the isdn from the computer. A strike hit the phone line which blew the isdn TA and must have jumped to the cat5 cause it fried the laptop mobby as well. So a strike on your pole will fry the modem and everything connected too it!!

Those boxes can be had for cheaper from my company or from AC DC Dynamics in Germiston. Don't waste your money and be ripped off by Communica. Don't support people with ties to Bin Laden!

Basestations are earthed with a huge metal mass buried beneath them so they can withstand direct hits (from POWER LIGHTNING AND EARTHING COURSE, Telkom SA)

There is something to be said for convenience: i.e. driving out to Germiston or driving into town.

Plus, I know the people from Communica quite well. Would you care to explain your Bin Laden statement?
