wireless adsl router advice

Hi

I'm having an adsl line installation done next week and need to purchase a modem by early next week.

My requirements are : wireless adsl router with 4 built in lan ports.

I'm getting a 4mbps line - will an adsl modem be fine or do I need an adsl 2+ modem? Also will an adsl modem support 8mbps or do you need adsl2+ ?

I'm considering the Billion 800 VGT modem, but it seems a bit pricey? Is it reliable and worth the extra cash over say a D-Link ADSL1 wireless modem with 4 ports going for about R800?

Also where to buy modems (not online) in CT area?

I would advise you to get a billion router...I have worked with them and they work like a charm!

why not go for a wireless netgear router, they work pretty well, one of the best i think.

billion, netgear, linksys & cisco routers is the way to go. Some d-link routers are also decent once you upgrade their firmware.

ADSL1 could go to 8mbps, but for anything above that you'll have to get an ADSL2+ router, which should be basically all the routers/modems on the market.

You should be able to get the D-Link DSL2640U for anything from R600 (online) - R800+ (in stores), because its a very common/popular/cheap router. Its not the best router, but its ADSL2+, supports half-bridge mode, wireless with WPA2 security & its got 4x 100mbps ethernet ports.

I would say that if you can get any of those brand-named wireless ADSL2 modem/routers for R800 that can do everything that you need it would be fine.
Since you want wireless, I suggest that you ensure that the router supports either MAC filtering and/or WPA2 security. You could also consider getting a 802.11n wireless router, but it would be considerably more than the 802.11a/b/g ones!
