Hi Guys

I primarily got ADSL for the good pings and unlimited local gaming.
However I'm getting crap pings - in the region of 70-90ms - when I'm sure I should be getting 30-40ms (what other Durban ADSL buddies are getting)

Below is a tracert to one of the SAIX CS servers:
Tracing route to 196.4.79.54 over a maximum of 30 hops

1 1 ms 1 ms <1 ms 192.168.1.254
2 45 ms 43 ms 44 ms wblv-146-192-01.telkomadsl.co.za [165.146.192.1]

3 44 ms 47 ms 45 ms wblv-ip-er-1-fe-11-1-1-1.telkom-ipnet.co.za [196.43.11.214]
4 66 ms 66 ms 66 ms tpr-ip-esr-1-ge-6-0-0.telkom-ipnet.co.za [196.43.10.86]
5 * * * Request timed out.

The timeout at hop 5 is normal because I'm not pinging a port. However what is disturbing is the 40+ms it takes on hop 2.

A ping to karoo.mweb.co.za confirms the poor latency of hop 2:
Tracing route to karoo.mweb.co.za [196.2.128.100]

12 100 ms 97 ms 96 ms karoo.mweb.co.za [196.2.128.100]

I'm with Imaginet 4GB at the moment, so I'm wondering whether this could be the cause (ie. inefficient routing). I'll be calling them in the morning to investigate ;)

Do any of the network fundis around know what/where the above hops are?

BTW, I am defintely on "Fast" ADSL mode - a quick telnet into my Billion router, followed by the command "wan adsl chandata" confirmed it:

router> wan adsl chandata
near-end interleaved channel bit rate: 0 kbps
near-end fast channel bit rate: 320 kbps
far-end interleaved channel bit rate: 0 kbps
far-end fast channel bit rate: 192 kbps

Looks pretty normal to me... You are using a "resold" SAIX account by the looks of things..
Here is what I get via Internet Solutions, bearing in mind that Mweb use IS as their service provider :

Get this - when I ping Mweb servers in Cape Town ( I live in CT btw) I get a worse ping than when I ping the SGS servers in JHB.

Well I called Imaginet about this one...they can't really help apparently because they "only do authentication and capping".
They offered to log a SAIX query for me...:(
I'm gonna try the same tests with an Axxess and TelkomInternet account to see if I gt the same results...

ScrnScm, u in Durban right?
I'm starting to suspect the real problem is in fact hop 4 in my tracerts...I'm losing 20+ ms there...

Not unusual dude. If you go through SAIX - they peer with IS in Joburg so any connection to an IS based server, irrespective of where you are coming from, has to go through the IS peering link in Jhb first!

Lewstherin, I have some DNS settings and an account if you'd like to try out. Im thinking its your ISP. I tried one from IS and I get 60-80 to gamezone (Cape Town server) but get 160-180 to SAIX?!
So it must have been the ISP. PM me or come chat in #dwc on shadowfire server in mirc and we can discuss account details and such ;)

Just made a breakthrough!

Im using the NetGear DG834 and was swopping between router and modem mode (correct terms?). Anyway, when I dialup to my ISP I get 41-51 pings. But when I put it in the mode where it shared like an Internet gateway, well I get the pings reported above.

What gives?

Razer did u sleep last night? ;)

Velly velly interesting results re: the modem vs router mode...I will have to give that a try...

I'm also suspecting the ISP side...although I thought Imaginet resold SAIX?

BTW, CS is an amusing hobby...nothing like pwning some kiddie and stuffing his stats up :)

Lol, I didnt actually. Does that make me a bad person? :p I feel wide awake but theres no activity going on upstairs...

Whats worse is when they spawn on your team the next round screaming in your ear.. just wanna shout back, TURN YOUR TREBLE DOWN! :D

Anyway... ive got access to both an IS account and telkomdsl one. Was getting 250 local to SAIX, 60 to gamezone. Swopped account to find 30's to Saix. Cant say I know much about Imaginet. Although I did try a UUnet account too, pings are a leeetle bit higher.

thats very bad, i traced the route from lonodon and get 70ms: telkomadsl.co.za {165.146.192.1:80}, my router- D-Link G604T, is about 68feet away(i hate imperial system) thats about 20 meters:mad:
I highly suggest freeing up ram since 10%-20% of your bandwith is used up on System services.
It also partly due to your isp since the further away your access point is(not the router, the buliding with the switch and the bridge).
Since i use AOL. Over the router it said i need to use PPPoA, but i used PPPoE instead. My times went very slow.!
So it's safe to assume that in some places in the world, "internet access camel jockey surfin' hell" they call reality insures it's going to always be lagging? I tried vDSL because charter cable lags much worse. I used to have this dial up account that I got pings with 100's with but their backbone was a T3 and a small ISP, no lag whatsoever.
Unless im playing my south african brothers in Battlefield:)
