Can someone please help, or maybe just let me know what to do in a situation like this?
I’m in the process of moving my Telkom Phone/ADSL line, to our new house that we moved in to, after Telkom assured us that ADSL is available on that line. This line is critically important, as I need ADSL to enable me to do my work. (I’m working for an overseas company, developing their main websites).

We called Telkom round the 13th of May 2005 to order this move. They ensured us that this move will take between 14 and 21 days. After 14 days I gave Telkom a call to see when this will take place - on which I was given an installation date for the 24th of June 2005. 33 WORKING days later.

After making peace with this very late date, I was just happy to at least have an installation date, as I could now inform my employees that from this date on everything will be running at full speed again.

On June 23rd I gave Telkom a call to make sure they will be there the next day. Again, they assured us that the installation will take place on the 24th, but could not give us a time. I had to take the day off, as this was an “any time – all day” installation.

Friday 24th June 2005 came, but no Telkom, or at least a call from Telkom to inform us they can’t or won’t come for whatever reason. No apologise were made, not a single phone call from this “Telecommunication Giant”. With Telkom having a telecoms monopoly in SA, who can I turn to – no one apparently.

We start ringing them on, Friday, Saturday and Monday, and to my surprise not a single person (from the 10 + I spoke to) were able to tell me as to why this has happen or what might be the solution for this fiasco.

O no, Shocking news. This will cost me thousands.
I checked with Telkom specifically, before I agreed to move into the new house, if ADSL was enabled, as I need this for my work.
27 June 2005 – 10:00
I just received a phone call from Telkom informing me they made a mistake. They just realised that I won’t be able to get ADSL in that area.
Even if I use my phone number to check on their website for ADSL availability, it shows that I can get it. I do know that this is just an indication, and that’s why I waited till they told me the exchange is enabled and I can get ADSL before I moved house.

What can one do? Is it just my luck, or does this kind of unacceptable service seems to be in order of the day?

Regards
Ronnie

This is the 4th time i've seen this story.
Teklom do it quite regularly.
Rule 1 of any Service Provider Agreement = If its not on paper, it does not exist.

Rumour has it that the last person to call and book an ADSL line installation is the first person to get serviced, it's worth a shot - call and book the installation as if you never had previously.

Would like too

They just informed me that - suddenly that exchage won't be able to get ADSL.

Telkom would say exactly the same

eish shame man

The above quote sounds like something Telkom would say. Shame but nothing we can do about it...

they have voice logs of all calls made to their "help desk" (bursts out laughing). it's a pity you couldn't sue them over loss of income based on promises made by their website and staff.

You can campaign like hell. PLease see associated threads under active campaigns and the consumerism and deregulation forums.
If you like, i can help you get action.
The person to escalate this to is Dr Sharon Horton at telkom and to your local press.
Please PM me for details.
I am also moving house this week so cannot guarantee that i will be able to reply immediately, but will definitely by the weekend - that is if Telkom move my ADSL line on SAturday as promised. :D

Did you confirm any of the calls in writing?

Rule number one is that one confirms something as important as this with a written followup requesting their confirmation of your understanding. I think that had you obtained a written agreement to carry out the installation by certain date, you would have a case (comment from lawer types?). ICASA should be the way to go for you , but I wish you luck there!

Ronnie, I think your best bet at this stage is to find an ISP who can lend a helping hand.

Someone like Datapro :- http://www.datapro.co.za/contacts/key_contacts.htm

Go for an uncapped Datapro service and see if they can move this beast that is Telkom.

No, I'm not affiliated with Datapro, I just know that if anyone can help, they will be able to - they are big enough to have some clout.

Ronnie ... is this place in Durbanville next to the road going to Malmesbury ???.

Thanks for all the replies

Have send these letters to various publications, etc. 99% nothing will happen, but I'll wait and see.

Thanks for all the resposes and suggestions.
